Thanks so much you guys. I was thinking $800 - $1,000. I doubt he will go that low. I guess he will probably be hanging on to it. Let me know if anyone else is interested and I will get you the guy's number. Thanks again for everything.

I payed $200 for my Comet but that was way back in 1993 so i don't know what a Comet or A Maverick really is worth these days. Since most of these guys on the board don't like the big bumpered Mavericks and Comet and treat them as having LESS value then the small bumpered Mavericks and Comets you can use this as a point to the seller that the car is not worth to much as MOST people won't want it because they want the smaller bumper Mavericks. With this in mind offer the seller $500 and tell him if it had the smaller bumpers it would be worth much more, maybe the seller will go for it. If you really want this car you can always up the offer after to say $750 to $1000, after that walk away. Another Maverick will come along.:)(y) By the way -Welcome to the board.

If it costs $500-600 to do a small bumper swap (and do it right), then the car is worth that much less.:D

If the guy won't take 500-800 for this car... walk away.
Hang around here and you will find something worth the wait I'm sure.

Only go to $1k on this car if you are POSITIVE that the door rust is the only rust on the car... maybe a little hood lip rust. If there is any other rust, find the strength to walk away, seriously. Unless he is willing to go way down in price anyway.

Cowl rust, floorpan rust bigger than say a nickel, and ANY rust around what we call 'torque boxes'... don't take the car for anything less than steel scrap value. Torque boxes amount to the reinforced section under the back seats where the rear subframe, front of the leaf springs, and the unibody in general all converge. It is a high stress area, and is somewhat prone to rust as well. At least when floor pan rust gets out of control.

I guess what I am trying to say is rust kills and rust is the hardest thing to fix on an old car and you are often better off waiting for a purchase with less/no rust. Even if it is up to 50%+ more in price. It is worth it. Buy a $1k car with rust, you will spend more than $500 fixing it. Buy the same car for $1500 without rust, you are saving money.

Thank again everybody for all the help. The guy wanted $2,000, but wouldn't go any lower than $1,750. We told him no way. So, I guess maybe one day I can get my husband to go for one. This just wasn't meant to be I suppose. If anyone wants his number and can talk him down, which you may be able to, let me know. Thanks again for everything.

    Signed, a future Maverick owner!
