Sorry, couldn't help it. I have an addiction for looking at spinning silhouettes (thank Stefan for putting in a spell check, or i would have never gotten "silhouette" spelled correctly:hmmm:)

So...as an aside... do you see her spinning clockwise (right brain dominant) or counter clockwise (left brain), or can you, like a certain percentage of the population, cause your perception of the direction to switch at will (with concentration)?.

All pretty spooky since she is an unchanging animation of only 34 frames in a constant loop. What is happening is that the two-dimensional image does not contain enough three-dimensional information to tell the brain which way she is spinning. So your brain helpfully fills this in, as brains do in many optical illusions. Only, in this case the brain can do it one of two ways dependent on your cognitive resources.

How about the occasional stopping? Well, perception of time is pretty subjective, and our experience of inertia is that when things make a 180-degree change in direction, they have to slow and stop first- this dramatically influences what your brain EXPECTS to see happening.

What this animation does not actually involve (in the strictest sense) is different sides of the brain, as all the blog posts claim. What you see is purely due to your perceptual and cognitive flexibility. (y)
