Who knows about exhaust manifolds?

I am putting a 5.0 roller motor with GT 40 heads in my 71 Comet GT. I have had major issues with headers, so I decided to go with the stock exhaust manifolds. Now, the front spark plug on the drivers side will not go in easily, is very close to the manifold and I cannot even get the spark plug boot on. I have ground the manifold down a bit, but still things are too close... so I must do something else. The stock Explorer manifold will fit, but the two front plugs are impossible to get to... & it looks like it has really small exhaust ports. What suggestions do you have for this 5.0 HO motor... I am running out of patience!

 

Sounds like you have GT40p heads

 

I read on a Mustang forum that Mustang Hi-Po manifolds clear the plugs on P heads.

 

Yes, I have looked and I have the GT-40p heads. As the Ford Motorsport dealer said, 'P' is for problem. Who out there has faced the same issue and what headers did you put on your Comet or Maverick? Yes, I do have power steering, so I probably need shorties...
