...this is better than a crap shoot with an unknown machine shop...:yup:

Guy here just had a 302 flat tappet motor built...ran 20 mins. and the cam wiped out...shop said..."it was his fault". this Guy took all the care to make sure it didn't happen... this was done at a shop a few of us have had problems with...same shop that said my motor was turning 10,800 RPMs at 93 MPH. on his dyno...:bs:

    now he's building a...roller motor...:thumbs2:

Maybe I'm different than everyone else...............but you can't tell me none of you guys know a good machine and don't know the owner or head machinest by his first name......................if the answer is no then I'm totally blown away!
Sure, with a crate motor you get a piece of paper..........but when I had my machine work done and Bob Gromm mostly put the motor together, he told me and we shook hands........."If the motor expired on the dyno I would be bringing it back to him to fix",....................I ended up doing so ( at his request) because my machinest....Bob Gromm...............was not pleased with the oil pressure and the fact the one piece rear seal failed............I took it back to him and he replaced the oil pump with a HV...........and put in a new rear main seal and pin'd it for me................................Like I said in the earlier post...................just send it out here and I will personally make sure it gets taken care of......................my 2 cents.

If you were going to have an engine rebuilt, it's a waste of money to go with a flat tappet engine for a street car. Roller blocks are cheap.
Around here, it's $2500.00+ to get a short block done correctly, cleaned and fluxed, decked and line bored, new pistons, rings fit, all new bearings, and new rod bolts, and you supply the cam and lifters....I've seen some pretty sweet crate motors over at the Mustang shop I hang around at, those Ford Racing engines are pretty tempting.

reman. and crate engines are taking out most of the shops around here.
at my friend Harolds shop he builds some hot motors but said as for a stock rebuild...O'Rileys is cheaper and has a one year plus his labor to pull and reinstall the one bad one he got...:yup:
also a lot of the racers around here buy pull out motors at the salvage yards for 5-600 bucks...put the juice to it till it blows then get another one...:yup:

Well............I would expect any machine shop to stand up to their work, on the dyno or in the car..............so why would anyone take a motor to a shop that has caused issues more than once in the past???????
I guess I missed the part about ligthning striking the dyno and causing it to say you motor was turning over 10krpm........................I don't understand the last, "Now he's building a...roller motor.....

Hey Frank................hope you know I'm not picking on you:Handshake
As for a stock motor.................it's probably cheaper to buy one from Sears, Kragen, Autozone.......................but you don't build a stock motor and "go fast" motor the same....................and I understand your friends coments............and he is right.
About going and spending $5/600 for a wrecking yard motor..........then adding juice until it desinigrates..................well..........a lot of time hunting the motor, taking the old one out, putting the new one in.......unless you have a Big Zipper..................I'd rather spend my time at the races rather than changing motors all of the time............IMHO

True but only if you have the ability and resources on hand. Your right with your quote though.

he didn't know about the shops rep. Mike and i were discussing his choice of shops when he found out...:bouncy:
the flat tappet cam went south so he is building it back as a retro fit roller cam motor...
around here, most..."race motors"...are yours when they leave the shop...

"hope you know I'm not picking on you."...it's all good...:thumbs2:

    You're right Darren,

Resources are always an issue, and ability..............a lot of guys on this forum that would lend a hand...........me included..................I may be getting old, and sometimes it's really hard to get up from laying on your back fighting putting a third member in the car................but anyone within 4 hours driving and I'd be there to lend some of blood/sweat/tears.

Yup, going South from my house, 9 hours to San Diego/Mexico boarder and that is not counting traffic.
Going North it's 6 hours to the Oregon/California boarder....usually not much traffic except Big Rigs going that way...................

Thanks to everyone who gave me advise. I have been restoring my original first car The Mav (a '73) for 17 years now and need to finish it before I don't have the energy to anymore. Spookie has been a fun car and has made a lot of friends but with a heavy heart the Roundup will be his last ride. I have decided to take the parts from him that I need for The Mav and part out the rest.
