Yes they did but...the slotted push rod holes are throwing me off.not to mention double nutting the rockers...old hotodders trick for keeping mechanicle valvetrain in adjustment a bit longer.
Early small block V8's have slotted valve guides. Mid '66 (5/2/66) Ford went with rail rockers and changed the valve guides. The HiPo head has valve spring pockets cast into the heads and have 2 dots cast above the 289 lettering and never used rail rockers.
The 221, 260, and 289 through 65 had the slotted pushrod guide holes in the head. The HiPo 289 used the slotted heads and so did the Shelby 289.
are you leaking water by the outer edges or at the manifold line? you manifold gasket may be allowing air from the exhaust port in the head to the manifold channel to leak and make noise on top. that can tick pretty loud also. that is right by the 7 cylinder before 8. with your car fairly cooled off, fire it up then place your hand just by the intake manifold near the valve cover. if that spot gets hot several times quicker than the rest of the head or you feel it blowing that may be your problem. most likely the gasket can be replaced if it stock but aluminum may be warped.
I think we are forgetting that this person is in Mexico and the Mexican Mavericks did come with 289 engines. That noise sounds like either a REALLY loud lifter or possibly the slapping of a rod getting ready to bust loose
Good one. Still havent seen that double nut set up though. Looks like someone is trying to take up a lot of lash.
Hey all! Thanks to your guys instructions in this thread I was able to resolve the tapping noise I was getting as well. It was the first rocker arm on the passenger side. The rocker arm was actually not even lined up properly (doh!). Got it all put back together... she sounds much better now. However, I am getting a *putt, putt, putt* noise over on the driver side near the manifold (closest to the cab). I probably couldn't hear it until now - due to the rocker arm being off on the passenger side. Any ideas of exactly where it might be coming from, and how to fix it? This car had been sitting outside for about seven years. I'm sure there are many other things damaged from my teenage neglect. Oh, and one more thing...my exhaust system from the manifold back is really rusted and worn. Any ideas where I can get another dual exhaust setup? I checked around my local junkyards but there are no Mavericks or Comets. Is the exhaust system I have specific to the 302? Really what I'm getting at is what exactly (key word) should I be searching for? Lots of questions but I thank you all in advance for your help!!! -Rafi
...when i'm checking for exhaust leaks...i use a 2-3 ft. piece of heater hose. i place one end to my ear and the other end i move around the exhaust manifold/collector flange... ...Frank...:Handshake
I have seen something like those double rocker nuts aftermarket. It is a way to make the early Fords and some Dodges have an adjustable rocker if I remember right. Notice the top nut is a locking type nut. Sure looks like the 289 head with that slot though. Glad you got it figured out. I also use the heater or smaller fuel line hose to the hear, especially when tracking down vacuum leaks or exhaust. You get near the leak it will let you know very loudly. lol clint
Thanks for the info guys...I did what you suggested and it sounds like it's coming from where I expected; the driver side exhaust manifold (closest to the cab). It also sounds like the connection from the manifold to the exhaust pipe on the driver side is not as sealed (or tight) as it should be. I think I might have to pull the engine out to properly change the exhaust manifold gaskets, and/or exhaust manifolds themselves? There's not much room to work but maybe you all think differently? If I pull the engine out at least it will give me time to clean it, paint the block, etc. Let me know and thanks as always!
