i see where your coming at but my plan is to equal the HP to a 302 and it would sound like one too. people would ask whats under the hood and you could just say "it's just a six" but the difference is im not out to make a race car just something that would sound cool and have enough power for some fun on street. but if i was trying to make a drag car v8 all the way!
Except for a few turbo'd cars, the small sixes(170/200/250)are not good hi perf engines.Naturally aspirated small sixes do well to reach 200 hp w/plenty mods(the '70 250 was rated at 101hp factory, later ones were less than 100)a mild,MILD 302 will surpass that. There's an old Mustang over on fordsix,he's got the new aluminum head/detached intake w plenty of other engine mods,3500 stall,3.80 gear.It runs low 15's,he says that 14's will be easy w/some tuning. With the factory "log" type head it's best was 16.11.A stock, good running v8 Mav will run about 16.5 or quicker.Add a gear, stall, headers and a good intake/carb and you're as fast or faster than the previous mustang(with that $1800 head/intake).BTW,it'll always sound like a six because...well,uh,it's a six.If you're keeping it six powered, just use it for it's intended purpose,a classic economy car.
I've had mine up to 115, down a long hill, with a tail wind, holding it to the floor. I don't recommend you do the same, but I did it. My buddy's stock '99 F150 4x4 will hand the Maverick it's ass off a red light. You want it to be fast, you have to pay for it to be fast. I did outrun the V6 Dakota he used to have, but that truck was hilariously slow.
