A C4 behind an N/A street engine is more than good enough to handle the power as long as the trans is in good shape. An AOD trans is in the same class. Good condition, correctly set TV, and helped with a shift kit, this trans will live behind a 302 or 351 for normal hot street use. When used in drag application, the service gotten out of any trans has to be accepted as part of the price of the sport like anything else. Complaints about this one or that, being 'no-good' is almost never made on a good basis and usually found to be influenced by the conditions under which the unit was used, built and serviced.
Aod all good points, except for one. you should know that a :stock; built AOD will have you wishing you had gone with a performance upgrade in a week of driving. They shift sloppy, you have no control over rev shift points, or 1st,2nd, 3rd or overdrive with a stock AOD. So, if your going AOD, do yourself a favor & get a perfromance valve body From Lentech or baumann racing. Or, you will just be pulling that AOD in a month & doing upgrades anyway!
roy, respectfully, the AOD is highly influenced by the TV pressure setting in stock form. A low setting does indeed make them feel lazey but that is not an excuse to down play that trans. It's a matter of setting it up. True that a shift kit makes them sharp shifing to the extent the modifications are made to the valve body. The C4 is no different in most respects. Shift points can be altered as well as control over od drop-in and holding. I run one with a shift kit, A servo, have throttle contol over shift points and have the max rpm shift points moved up beyond 5400 rpm. This unit is living behind a Kenne Bell blower at 6 psi boost in a 4200 lb car as driven with gas and a passenger for the last 3 years. I have no regrets about this transmission. I also run a c4 with a shift kit in my modified FI Comet so know a bit about both.
