Don't congratulate me yet. The deal has not been finalized. Still working thru the history & details...
Sounds like a opportunity that you can't pass up! How did you come acrossed it? I remember seeing it on ebay, and if I recall right, it has been in storage for a while. Glad to see someone have the sense to save it!
Here's the irony. I posted that info here when the car was listed on ebay. The seller never mentioned any of that info & even mistakenly stated that it was owned by Doug Nash, which was not true. I knew about this car & contacted the seller & informed him whose car it was & who built it. I even referred to a feature article on the car in Hot Rod, June of 1970 issue. He was shocked at what I knew. I have photo of this very same car from Feb. of 1970. I just happened to recognize the car on ebay. He did not know what he had. He wanted $20,000 for the car at the time. So 6 months go by & I emailed the guy & asked if he still had the car. He stated yes, it's just sitting in his barn. Well, I've got him down to $12,000 for the car, including the Boss 302 backup motor. Right now, I'm trying to determine how many mods the car has gone thru since its' original raced condition back in 1970. I must then determine if it will be worth it dollars wise to bring the car back to its' original form. I also deciferred the VIN for him. He stated that it was the 15th Maverick from Ford, but as you guys know, many different models ran down the same assembly line & that his how the VINS are sorted. So, it's very posiible that this car is the 1st or 2nd Maverick ever produced.
It is worth it man...........keep this piece of history alive where it will be appreciated. A Magizine worthy car if ever there was one. Later.....
GS.. ..I remember seeing that car on E-bay but did not know it was pulled before it sold. I think you should introduce yourself a bit for those here who don't know your experience with Boss 2's. I follow your comments along with others on the Boss 302 message board. Guys, it says something about a group of enthusiast when your username on a message board is the VIN number of your car. I hope you get it GS, your appreciation for the Maverick along with knowledge of the Boss engines will make that a nice story to hear someday. Seth
Well, I thought I'd update you guys. The deal is dead. I received a boat load of pics from the seller. The problem I have is that the car has been converted to a Tube Chassis. Now, that's fine if you want to go racing, but as a collectable, able to hold a its' value in the vintage drag racing collectable market, the cost would be prohibitive to bring back the car to its' 1970 as raced condition. The floors, wheel tubs & the subframe rails have been completely removed. It could be done at a reasonable cost if someone performed a rebody. To me, I don't believe in rebodies & it's my opinion that this form of restoration misrepresents the actual car for what it was.
GS it's a shame you are so far away from me, I know of a SWEET 1970 two door with 63,000 miles. Still has the window sticker setting on the seat. Very small amount rust in the rear quarter panel but other then that for 1000.00 it's a steal. It's been stored in a garage and is still stored in a garage. Good luck in your search. Terry
Aw man, I feel like I just came out of the theater after watching the ending of a sad movie. Sorry to hear the news, GS. At least we know where "it" is now. Sounds like you made the right call - it wasn't what you thought you were going to be getting. May your sequel have a happier ending. 'Luck, Rick
ditto ditto on what Rick said......it was like a soap opera.... uh...I mean...a car race....yeah that's it.......Robert Good luck next try...
GS, Major disappointment! That truely is a shame! Sorry to hear that it didn't work out for you. I know a lot of us were pulling for you hoping things would go in your direction. I have to admit it was pretty exciting to know that someone on this board may have been able to pick up that great piece of Maverick history. Thanks for the update, I was off the board for a couple of weeks when you originally posted the update, so I am a little late getting this post up. Take care,
