The chrome/moly rings are (or used to be) chrome rings with a groove (or two) that was filled with moly. This was supposed to allow the ring to seat faster like a moly ring and to last under high pressures and speeds like a chrome ring. It was not very successful because the coarse finish needed for the chrome ring usually rolled the moly out of the groove. They were not made of chrome-moly steel. You guys are way too young!
Nope, not too young. Just never saw those rings. Only ones I've ever run across were black iron, chrome, and moly rings.
Hastings makes the 2M 4026 rings for 2.5L turbo. This is a Plasma-Moly top ring (also known as Chrome-Moly because of the impregnated chrome in the Plasma-Moly) The ring material is ductile iron and in this case the plasma has both chromium and moly in it.
