The steering boxes wear and get sloppy. They're not hard to adjust. Mine's 34 years old and has 170,000 miles on it, still feels like new. Only ever adjusted it twice. Loosen the locknut on the top of the box and gently turn the screw clockwise until you feel resistance. Back out the screw 1/4 to 1/2 turn and tighten down the lock nut while holding the screw in position. I've heard that it's more accurate if someone slowly turns the steering while back and forth while you make the the adjustment, but i've never done that. Turn the wheel lock to lock and check for binding, if it binds back the screw out a little.

    Steering play

Check the splines on the steering shaft near the rag joint, one day my 73 Comet manual steering would only turn right, then let go steering wheel to straighten out, no left turning capability, steering box replaced with a used steering box from a Mavrick w power assist, Arnold arms to steer, somehow noticed splines were iffy, in the end the original steering box was put back in again and pinch bolt for splines tightened good, everything works fine

I think box has adjustment, if there is a flat spot game over, source good used box
