Sounds like you set it up right.

This was posted by scooper in one of your other threads.

"What always irritated me is that you "think" you have it lined up and ready to drop in, then when the gears mesh, it rotates the pointer to the next plug. So on top of all the other stuff, you have to rotate the rotor and then drop it in and hope it de-rotates back to #1.

I always found that you can just barely lift the dizzy up while putting rotating pressure on the rotor, and feel it skip from tooth to tooth, and catch the tooth that lets it drop down into the right spot."

This is how i always did mine.Never had any problems.

Maybe a dumb question,but...it's a process of elimination! How much play do you have in the dist. shaft?Has all the wire routing been checked and rechecked? What is the cam,302/351?Dist.gear match the cam?(steel/bronze),ect.?

Recheck dizzy at #1 Top Dead Center. Your timing light advance knob should be set at 0 degrees. Start an check your timing for what you want set at idle.

When you have the dist. cap off, rotate your rotor and see what kind of play you have. Should be next to nothing, did you look at the dist. gear for wear? The jumping around in timing may be the chain, gear wear, advance loose in dist, or could be your light.

Double check dist. rotor for pointing to #1 on cap, recheck again and go over your firing order.

first off i have to say.... HOLLY CRAP! i just had a taste of ford power and it spun my 10 inch wide tires like it was nothing!!!!! i just turned the distributor a little more advance. but things got hot quick, with in 10 sec, i hit 40, it bogged and temp was at 230.

all wires have been checked, i was running a roller distributor in it for a while because i forgot that i didnt have a roller cam so i put back in the regular distributor so now it has the right one in. It may have done its damage though.

i have a little bit of play with the cap off but i think thats just the rotor.

plan is to burp the car, and head out again.

Nice! Now to see why your timing is jumping.Hopefully you didn't chew up the gear on the cam.:(I still say"change that timing set"!:yup: I would hate to see you get everything dialed in,and have that chain jump, stretch anymore than it is,or knock some teeth off the gear....CRUNCH!

The modulator won't change the wide open throttle shift points - that is controlled by the governor. Adjusting the modulator only affects the part throttle shift and if you adjust it for later shifts the shifts get hangy - the shift is slow and it between gears longer.
What rear gears do you have? Are you getting wide open throttle? Is your "kick-dwn" linkage set up and adjusted properly? If the engine isn't operating properly then your transmission won't behave properly either.

    #1 Spark plug???
Needs to line up with # 1 wire on cap.

    Timing,firing order,timing chain.
You need to verify dist. position at #1tdc at top of compression stroke. Rotor should be at #1 on cap.
