Does anyone have a picture or the part number for the manual shift lever on the C4 transmission for a floor shift car? From what i've read here, the lever of a column shift car can be flipped over and used as well - so any pictures of this would be welcome, too. The shop manual is not really any help - it only says "7A256", but no complete part number. My transmission only has a one sided lever and i would like to know what part i need to hunt down!
I have read on this forum that flipping the lever works. I am here to say that it did NOT work for me on my 71 GT. Its hard to explain but when you go towards the park side of things the shifter lever on the trans was facing straight back and didnt have enough angle to get out of park. 1st gear was pointing at 11:00 and park was at 3:00. Could I have gotten it to work? Maybe but thats a lot of stress at the angles I had. The only part not original on my car is the transmission which was from a 72 comet colum shift. This makes me think that possibly floor shifter cars may of had a different shift lever installed in the transmission. The fix for my car was to cut off the shift lever and reweld it facing straight up for nuetral. This made the shifter movement stress free and smooth and made the movement feel the same through all the gears. Ben
Flipping the lever will not work with some shifters - most cable shifters can be adjusted or remounted for the lever in either position. If the shifter you are using has a solid connection (rod) between the shifter and transmission then you need the correct lever. I don't have any and I don't have a part number but some of them have BOTH levers - they are always safe to use.
from the shop manual i figured that the floor shift mustang from 71-73 might use the same double sided lever as the maverick/comet. it has a rod connecting to the column as well as the rod to the shift lever on the floor. it also has the two groves for a tranny mounted neutral safety switch. i'll let you know if this one works out!
Flipping the lever didn't work either with the C4 I have. But if you use a B&M cable kit and shifter, it's not needed anyway. The B&M lever clamps onto the portion of the lever sticking out past the shifter lever.
I found one from a '67 Mustang that worked on my C4. That was before the T5 conversion. I did get the entire shifter and lever, linkage and the neutral/safety switch when I got it. Good luck!
