I thought John (I believe he found these pics) eventually disclosed that Shelby Inc. was merely in the aftermarket parts business by '71. Note, we have never seen a pic of the back of that car. I appears to be a Maverick-Grabber striped with a Comet (first debut '71 model year) hood and grill. The hood has no trim. Unknown badge on front fender. Some speculated it had a Cobra snake emblem in rear package tray. All this could have easily been made up by Juan Rogriquez Performance Auto Parts(or whoever) as a marketing tool for Shelby's and other aftermarket parts. I have heard Shelby authorized some 'Shelby Editions', and I have heard that he had nothing to do with them. Both stories I have heard from Shelby enthusiasts. Seth
well, bottom line is that car did exist! The pictures prove it, did Shelby himself approve it but there is something special somewhere! Where it is now....who the hell knows. But it might, very well could be somewhere Maybe in that old barn you pass every day going to work. Just just never ever know.
But who's to say it isn't just a one off demo car built for the show just to advertise Shelby aftermarket parts? If there were truly 300 of these built (I think that is the rumor) ... there would be lots more information, documentation, pictures, etc ... Heck ... look at all the Comet Bearcats that were built. I don't know of a single surviving one today (in it's all original side pipe glory anyways) .. but there is documentation and pictures to prove they existed ... and they were a mishmosh of aftermarket parts as well ..
I won't argue your point Dan......but call my glass "half full" and I say there is always a chance that it (that 1 car) might still be around somewhere waiting to be found
I`m a little surprised that no one has tried to build a clone of the car in the picture. Might be pretty cool.
You better sleep in the garage with one eye open. Somebody with a screwdriver might be passing through on the way to CTC.:16suspect
But it is not "Shelby" unless the 'ole CS has some hand in the design of it...otherwise it is "shelby-ized" (note small s) May as well fake a Carrol Shelby signature on the dash while you are at it Hey, that is not a bad idea...I can fabricate some adhesive "Shelby Carrol" signature stickers and sell them, and then we will see all kinds of Shelby Mazdas, Shelby Hondas, and possibly a Shelby Maverick or two
Man now I am really steamed... I had a set of rear window louvers for a Maverick years ago and got rid of them somewhere along the line..
Ooops...I meant "Carrol Shelby", but then again, most anyone who would use the stickers wouldn't know the difference...
Be sure and let us know what federal penitentiary becomes your new home so we can stay in touch, send cards and letters, send cookies and cupcakes, and cigarettes (to use as money). That would be the least embarassing scenario. The most embarassing would be you being written about in all the car magazines with pictures of Carrol himself beating yo' butt. Imagine the shame of being cane whipped by an 83-year old legend with a heart transplant.
