The cam gears on the distributor shafts come in two sizes : .467 & .512 (not 100% on these dimensions, but they're close) The smaller fits the points and Durasparks, the later fits the TFI distributors for the mid 80's-up applications.

Also, when shopping for them, make sure it is PRE-DRILLED...the ones that are not drilled are cheaper, and unless you have the correct tools, it may be difficult to drill it straight through so it lines up with your shaft.

When you install a new distributor gear you're not supposed to align it with the old hole in the shaft. You should press the new gear on the shaft at the correct distance from the housing and drill a new hole through the gear and shaft 90* from the original. There is no standard location for hole placement so there's no guarantee that a predrilled hole in a new gear will give you the correct distance from the distributor housing.

I used the cheapest one I could find with the hole predrilled, not knowing about what you said about the measurements.

It was a mallory steel gear, predrilled, from Summit P#MAA-29418PD "Distributor Gear, Steel, Roll Pin Included, .467 in. Diameter Shaft, Ford, 221-302"

an update to my distributor.... it works great! dropped right in w/o any problems or issues what-so-ever. I highly recommend to anyone to go to their local parts house and order one for an '85 Mustang, 5.0, manual trans,w/ steel gear. worth every bit of $50 (plus core) :thumbs2:

used the whole dizzy. it has the factory Duraspark plug-in on it as well so would be great for people running a Duraspark or Duraspark II setup

double check the part number on the http://partsamerica.com website that way you'll know for sure you'll be getting the right one. took mine 2 business days to come in :yup:
