My Chilton's had it in the end of the chapter on the C4. I believe it is front band torque to 10 ft-lb (120 in-lb) and back off exactly 1 3/4 turn. Rear is same torque and back off exactly 3 turns. It's gotta be in your book, check again, maybe under maintenance or installation section.
Man, I miss having the access to work on my stuff that I had paying my way through college at a machine shop! I had 100" boring mills, lathes, all the pneumatic tools, forklift, crane, welding, plasma-torch, everything. Plus all kinds of spare parts to mess with and make it all work for me. Now I have a desk job, and have to work on my "off" hours in the garage, with standard tools. Makes it so much more difficult to get the big projects going without the good stuff around. When I left the machine shop, the boss gave me a Bridgeport milling machine that had slipped a key, and the table would only work one or two ways. I got it home on a trailer (this thing was 8' tall) and rewired it to 3-phase, and replaced the 50-cent key, and now I have a wonderfull piece of machinery. But, since I was still moving from apartment to aparment, I left in on loan with my wife's grandfather, with agreement that I could use his shop and tools whenever I needed. THat helps, but I can't always drive the Mav 60 miles to his shop, since usually it is the broken mav that needs fixin'.
Ok the manual i bought totally doesn't say that...I read every page last nite...the only thing even remotely close that it says regarding this is "Older model transmission bands may need to be adjusted but newer models have fully automatic band adjustment." Every single page I read and that's the best I got... So anyway I called my dad and he said he had an old Chilton's manual that might have it in it...so i went out there at 10 last nite and started looking thru it....Man was it old....lol....but guess what...I got lucky and it had a section mostly dedicated to Mav/Comet repair.....and woooo hooooo had information i was looking for....and Erick you were totally correct...that's what this manual says also....Thanks for the info......... Now i need to get this in cuz my mav just might have to be my work car for a while ...last night my wife broke the subframe on her chevy minivan....So she's gotta drive my Ford minivan till I can get hers fixed.......Hopefully I can get it fixed soon cuz i really don't wanna drive my Mav right yet....but if i have to i have to..... Thanks for all the help everyone.....btw Im on total overtime right now typing this....lol..... Thanks again.... Jeremy
OK guys i got er all back together and put on the engine.....had everything out....took it off and put it back 3 times to make sure it was staying where it was supposed to....dropped everything into the car....taking a break now before i hook everything back up and try er out.....man i hope this all works...... I should have it in a spot to be tested by midafternoon......i'll let ya all know how it worked out.... Later Jeremy
Crap it didn't work..... Ok, got everything in....hooked up.....bands tightened to specs....NOTHING ...Took coolant lines off radiator and im getting no fluid movement at all.....What could i have done wrong????Help with this would be soooo greatly appreciated.... If I give up and look for another transmission is there a way to find out if a tranny would work in my maverick?? Do i just need to measure and check everything to see if it's the same?? Need advice on this matter as well.... Thanks everyone.....im so frustrated all the work i put into this and then it doesn't work..... Jeremy
I am sorry it didn't work out. But, if it helps you feel better, just know that there are at least a couple of us who will not have to go through what you did, after following your thread. I will definitely take mine in and have someone else rebuild it.
Rebuilding the trans is like anything else, it may seem hard but after you do it you realize it is not that difficult. After you rebuild 1 then you will be a pro at it and won't have to take it to get fixed anymore. Learning takes time and patience. Don't feel bad, I had to take my tranny out 10 times to finally get it right. I still feel like it was worth it. Don't give up. It's probably something simple like not enough fluid. Also could be your valve body. Try just replacing the valve body with one from another transmission. I'm guessing that your insides were done right based on the details of your previous posts and the fact that it is hard to mess up the insides. They only go together one way. Tell us more details on what it is doing. Is it on the jack stands when you try it? Does it go into any gears? Are you sure the linkage is adjusted right? Did you put fluid in the converter? How much fluid did you put in? Don't worry, we'll get her fixed.
As long as you didn't hear anything actually break... odds are, it's either a stuck valve, or maybe something's up with the front pump, (as well as the other suggestions listed)
well shoot....gonna hafta park it elsewhere till spring it sounds like....gotta get it out of the shop here at work....that should give me time to get away from it and try to figure out what i may have done wrong. Man i was so excited gettin this back together. Maybe i'll get lucky either figuring out something simple was wrong or maybe i'll find a whole different transmission to go into it....either way won't be able to fiddle with it for a while at least. Thanks for everyones help/expertise and hints.......not gonna give up on this car tho...she is my baby.....just like every baby i guess there's gonna be times she throws a fit...lol..... Jeremy
i found a c4. Guy says it should be right...gonna go check it this weekend...says it worked when it came out.....gonna let me test it before i pay.......so hopefully this problem is solved...will def look have expert work on it next time...hopefully there is no next time...lol.... Thanks again everyone Jeremy
I wouldn't give up on the first one yet. Tear her back down, have a good close look at everything. Or better yet, get yourself a 300 pound pressure guage with a threaded hose..... On the trans, there should be a test port next to the shifter (looks like a little bolt) Pull it, thread in the hose, and run it, see if your pressures match what the haynes manual says they should. At the least, you'll stand a good chance of learning what happened, and what didn't work...
Well I haven't done anything as of yet with the car except get it prepped to be moved back to my parents barn.....However I have found both a transmission for it and also a 1976 Mav with good transmission. Im going to go pick up the car Saturday but not to use the transmission quite yet...I need it to drive back and forth to work.....Wife's van is broken....So hopefully i'll be able by next spring to get back to work on this project. Thanks again everyone for all the hints and advice you have all given. With this purchase Saturday that'll make 3 Mav's I'll now own....Hopefully i can turn one of em into somethin great.... Jeremy
IMO a few simple tests are easier to do than swapping the whole transmission out. I'd at least swap the valve bodies and try it before taking out the trans. If you learn it is something internal, then changing transmissions could be easier, but I'd much rather have a rebuilt transmission.
