In that case the only thing that is different is the water pump, front dress, and balance. My block is also a 90 5.0, but I used the older style front dress since all I started with was the short block.

The only thing you'll be able to use from the 1990 5.0 engine is the block, heads and oil pump. .... YOu need the correct:

Oil pan, Oil pump pickup, distributor, timing chain cover, fuel pump eccentric, fuel pump, pulley set, water pump, 50oz offset flywheel, intake, carb, and probably some other stuff I have forgot about ..

You'll need to change the oil pan.

That is Charlie Ping's write up and it explains the differences just like Dan listed above, Engine Balance, Distributor, Water Pump and Cover, Oil Pan. And don't forget the firing order change.

It is an easy swap and your doing the right thing by identifying what needs to be done up front.

That seems like a lot to do now. Would there be a better choice of a 302 to use?

Just get an old 302 full engine out of an older car.

Ford installed the 302 in a lot of different vehicles. Unless you get one from a 70's Ford or Mercury car (front sump pan) you will likely have to swap a number of parts to make it work anyway.

I have a 1995 5.0 in my car converted to carb... It's the cheapest way to get a reliable roller-cam based engine ... however ... if you don't already have an old 302 engine to scavenge all the required parts from ... it can get pricey and challenging ...

    Yeah I don't :/ So I guess I'm on the look for an old 302 from like a 60s or 70s Ford/Merc

May as well shoot for a 70s Maverick/Comet (no worries about the fit)...should be plenty out there. Maybe the 70s mustangs and Mustang IIs???

    Possibly the old Broncos? Torinos?

Just tossing out ideas, someone else will correct me.
