An engine will run without a fan belt at all. It is not mandatory for the water pump and alternnator to turn, for the engine to physically start. It is mandatory if you want to run the engine for more the about a minute. By threaded, I am refering to a flared end with a threaded end on it, like I said. Not a screw. I can't remember right now what it is called exactly. It's more like an inverted nut that fits over the pipe, then a screw.
I'm thinking it could be the floats. I had this exaxt problem on my El Camino. I'd wait to see what other guys thing, but try this if no one says no: Remove the top of the carburetor. The floats are held in by pins that should be very easy to push out with just a little screwdriver. Check the floats for cracks or holes. If they're bad, get a rebuild kit and replace them, or have someone do it as recommended earlier. If they're good, VERY GENTLY bend the angle of the floats so that they sit lower in the bowls. Remove the fuel line and plug it with a spare bolt and clamp it with a small hose clamp. Try to run the engine long enough to burn the excess fuel in the bowls -- just let it run till it's out. Hit it again with the carb cleaner and put it back together. This was my issue, and what I did, and now I've got a very strong running El Camino to sell.
im going to go ahead and install the starter, get the new fuel line, the new gas filter and put in the new points and stuff. Hope this works. No one answered the question about the battery. Is it ok for to just try and jump start it if the battery runs out of charge, or is it better that I go and charge it at autozone? Anyone think my car will work after this? If it doesnt work, then ill do the float thing with the carb. Thanks alot everyone
You can jump the car. The alternator will charge it once the car is running. Have you ever worked with points before?
Be carefully running the car too much with such a bad battery, I ruined my alternator by keeping an old battery in the car when it wasn't able to charge up. The alternator had to work overtime to keep me afloat, and eventually just gave up. I don't think it's necessarily a big thing at this point, but your next order of business might be a new battery.
oh ok i got it lol. No I havent worked with points before. Sierra grabber told me how to do it though. i dont know if i should . should I change the starter, the fuel line, the fuel filter and then try to turn in on and if it doesnt, then change the points? Anyway for me to be sure that the points are no good?
yea that actually a good idea . oh yeah and about the starter. On the instructions it says that if the starter is badly damaged( the thing that is turned by the flywheel, a gear looking thing, forgot the name) I might have to get a new flywheel. Is this really neccessary? Lets say I do need a new one. This would be something I need a professional to do right?
..right...the transmittion will have to be taken out of the car to replace this. you can take the "inspection plate" off the front/bottom of the transmittion and check the teeth. look at john fords' pics. of his starter mod. and you can see the teeth on the gear you are talking about. ...frank...
hey!!!!!!!!!1 Good news!!!!!!!!!!! and some bad . Car runs now!!!! It wont turn off until I turn it off. I put in the new starter, the new fuel filter, and I checked the fuel pump and it didnt work and I went ahead and got a new one. The car started on the third time I tried. Man i missed that sound. Anyhow here is the deal now: Gas leaks! The one wrote about is the fuel line. yeah I tried to get a new one at autozone. They only had straight fuel lines and no bent ones. They told me I had to go to a Ford dealership to get one. anyone think i can get one elsewhere before going to the dealer? I tried fixing fixing it with quiksteel, and it worked, but still leaks, although not as much. Heres the most important gas leak: the carburetor. The first times I start the car, it takes a few second and there is a leak. Sometimes the leak takes longer to come out. Im not sure where its coming from, but it seems to be coming from this one thing. If someone has a pic of under the carburetor I could show what it is. ill try and explain. You know the linkage to the gas pedal that opens the choke? Theres a linkage on the other side, under the fuel bowl that also moves when you press the gas. It moves this big spring in the fuel bowl and that is what gets the gas. Thats where a big fuel leak comes from. The car wont always start. Sometimes it takes a long time. I think its the carb, and the fuel leak from the car. I have enough money now for a carburetor. Should I go ahead and just buy it now? Thanks everyone for the help, without your advice would still not be working. Thanks alot!!!!!!!!!
Go ahead and buy a new carb. The straight fuel line is what I was talking about, and will more then likely be your only option. Thats what I was talking about with the flared ends and everything... Just screw it on the fuel pump and bend it to fit.
ohhh ok. But the dude at autozone told me something about that your not supposed to bend them or something. So I could just buy one and bend it myself? How many feet is the line suppose to be? what was the size? 3/8? thanks!
Not sure what the guy at Auto Zone was talking about, but from experience, unless they have grey hair, you can pretty much take what they say with a grain of salt. Just buy a 3 foot length of 3/8 steel brake line. It will come flared with ends already on it. The end that comes on it might fit your fuel pump threads, but then again you may need to get a brass brake line adapter. I have 3/8 brake line going from front to back of my car as the fuel line. I bent it to fit by hand. No problems with it in over 13,000 miles. You just have to be careful not to kink it when bending it by hand.
