I went to the local Pick-ur-Part today to see about some parts for the '72 Maverick I have in the garage. Now the car in my garage was hit in the right rear quarter and repaired very poorly. Right rear frame rail broken, right quarter installed 3/4" too far forward, back panel just bent forward to meet the quarter then made "straight" with bondo. You get the picture. So as I am looking around, I find a '72 2 door with a 250 six, C4 and column shift. The car has a factory AC, the motor is CLEAN, no obvious oil or fluid leaks. The right side door has been hit in the front and repaired, the right side fender has been replaced. The left side door has a minor dent and there is a minor dent above the left rear wheel opening. The interior has a bench seat with torn upholstery but the back seat looks good. There is only one place with any rust at all. At the back of the drivers side rear wheel well. The best part of the day was getting to the car before anyone had a chance to strip it of all the good parts. So, $500 later and the car is now mine. I will be try to get the 6 cyl. running and see what I have. If it runs well, I will just fix the minor body issues, upgrade to disc brakes, new ball joints, tierod ends, etc. and enjoy it. I have an extra set of doors, a good set of spare fenders, a body man friend who thinks he "owes" me, etc. If the engine has more serious problems, I will transfer the 302/C4 and 8" limited slip 3.25:1 rear and all the other good stuff from the "bad" car and enjoy. Either way, I think it was a win.
Sweet, was that in Chula Vista? $500 is a good buy. I bought a bunch of parts off of a 72 up here and I ended up spending more on the parts than it would have been to just buy the whole car. What color is it?
Yes, it was in Chula Vista. It is a light blue with a dark blue interior. I was lucky enough to get there early enough to beat the crowd. As it was, I had to chase off about a dozen people before we were able to get it moved out of the public area. One guy even started to remove parts even after I told him the whole car was sold. I can't wait to get it home and start playing. The only real down side is that I have to get a fuel tank, fuel guage sender and replacement straps. In CA, most yards remove the gas tank and crush it before putting the cars in the yard.
