I put a front end back together on a 77 impala a few years ago. I never believed in home alignments. I thought I would give it a try. Guess I nailed it, the owner drove 40 miles each way to work and back. Said it never drove better and the tires lasted. I now believe it can be done. But, I still take my stuff to get aligned. Dan ps a comment here. sometimes lack of funds creates american ingenuity, then again, sometimes it creates problems, in the end nothing ventured nothing gained.
