Sounds good - it's not ready for the road yet - but almost. She had a personalized tag so she kept it - so it doesn't have a tag. Also, I haven't transferred the title yet because I'm waiting on a lien release in the mail. Since this is the original title, it had the original lienholder listed. She couldn't find her copy. Try chasing down a lien release for a car bought in '71! Luckily the bank is still in business, although it's changed names a couple of times. I faxed them a copy of the title and they put the lien release in the mail this week. :bananaman It hadn't been started since last year when I looked at it (I was the last to start it). I got it started yesterday morning and it ran good. I played around with it a little and found that the A/C WORKS! I was surprised! I also took everything out of the trunk. It was full of kitty litter, gravel, tire changes, and studded snow tires. It probably lifted the back by 2 inches when I was done - so it doesn't sag near as bad as it looks in the pictures. I'll still put new leafs on it though. This weekend I'll take it out on the county roads to see how it runs, feel out the brakes, etc. If all is good all I need is a tag - I've already got Hagerty insurance on it.
I had changes planned for my first Comet with a 6 cyl but am leaving it as is, since I have another V-8 car. Mine was also bright read and filthy and dull when I got it... but it's all original and low miles too... so I'd suggest getting rid of the stickers and mud flaps for now and spending a few months cleaning, polishing, detailing and painting minor parts and "bonding" with the car... fix it up first, you might just fall in love with it just the way it is... I just wish mine was a stick shift too... Looks like a real nice car - even has original paint on the intake log? Sheesh.
You should try to hang on to the original title. When I got my 71, MD let me keep the original title and issued me a new one in my name. At the very least, scan it in to your computer.
Yes, it will stay a 6 cylinder. I took off the mudflaps - BIG IMPROVEMENT. I drove it today and it runs good - I need to do some brake work though. I really like the 3 speed floor shift. I'll be doing alot of cleaning and polishing in the near future. I got the lien release in the mail yesterday, so I'm ready. I don't think Oklahoma will allow me to keep the title, but I'll ask anyway. I have already scanned it and saved it to file. Well Gary, the leaf springs for the '73 will now go on this car. I have already ordered another set from JCW, but they're on backorder again. sheesh :16suspect
my thoughts exactly, but to me that's what makes it interesting. for some reason, ive always had an eye for floor shift, bench seat cars. dunno why..
That is so cool....Detail the thing and drive it!!! It's a true survivor...Wish mine was stick... That is GREAT!!!!
I thought so too. Maybe she didn't like buckets? Who knows. There used to be a yellow/black Grabber around town that was a bench seat, floor shift car (standard). It was the first I'd ever seen. I followed that car for years trying to buy, but could never get it. It was a rust bucket though. Sorry, I didn't take any pictures over the weekend.
I posted more "as I got it" pictures on www.oklahomamavericks.com. It includes some pics of the floor shift/bench seat combo.
Is that window winder knob red? Or am I seeing things? Is that normal? I've never seen color matched ones, only clear or black.
