Thanks to all for the kind words and encouragement. I took the rubber mat out of the car and it was wet underneath , especially the passenger side, but other than surface rust it is solid. The driver side is solid also except for two quarter size holes where the floor transitions upward. Looking under the hood, the firewall, inner fenders, radiator support all look solid. Looking under the car the floors look solid also. I'm well aware of early Mustangs, Falcons,Mavericks, etc having cowl problems, So my guess is thats where the water is coming from. The car was parked under trees and I feel sure the cowl is probably packed with pine straw compost, the one place that is rusted through is the lower passenger fender and I can see where pine straw residue lodged in the lower section keeping it wet and therfore rusting through, but so far I'm pretty stoked for a $400 car that almost went to the crusher!! Thanks again, Bossed:tiphat:

great project , my dad had one the same color (don't know the name of it) back around 1981, and that car was one of the reasons I got my 71 as my latest project..best of luck great find, glad it didn't go to the crusher.
