Ok i have a 1973 maverick with an inline 6 and i was wanting to put a 1979 ltd 302 in it and since it has the smog pumps and egr valve and things i am going to change the head to either a 1967 289 head with 289 intake manifold or 1973 302 head with 1973 intake manifold that was on a truck. Now i was wondering which head and intake would be better and why? Also i was wondering if i could put 1970 to 74 maverick headers on it because i am taking the smog pumps and egr off because i am changing the heads and intake manifold.
    Also thank you for reading

Why all the changes? I had a 79 LTD II once. I threw it out with the ex since she came with it. Use an aftermarket non EGR intake and a mild cam.

i don't have a lot of money and i think it would be nice to gain more horsepower by swapping to the 67 heads or 73 truck heads and get rid of that emission control junk

Ok. But the best gain is swaping the cam. The heads (any of them) can handle a little more air flow.
Back when I was messing with the same ideas I took my origional 73 heads and some 289 heads I got from a friend to a local head specialist. He helped guide me and suggested I simply use the origional heads and use the bigger exhaust valves someone had put in the 289s. He made other recommendations and made an impression to me. Maybe you could seek such advice. I can't see why it would cost anything for some advise and maybe make a connection to some help with future engine mods and stuff. Just a thought..

The 289 heads would be a better choice since they will up the compression ratio.
Those 67 289 heads should have 54.5cc chambers. This will give you a 9.5 to 9.8:1 compression ratio on a 79 302. Either intake will work with the 289 heads.

thx both of you for the advice. Mavman would the 289 heads or 302 heads be a direct bolt on and would it get rid of all the emission control stuff

Yes, the 289 heads are a direct bolt on as are the 73 302 heads.
Are your 289 heads drilled for the air injection??? (smog pump)Ford started setting em up in 66 for smog. If so...you can buy the screw in plugs for the end of the heads from a Ford dealer to close off the air injection ports. Not a biggie.

ive heard the 67 289 heads have some kind of holes that need to be drilled out for cooling that the 302 heads have in a different place

Thats a new one on me...I have to say...NO...Not necessary...Cleveland heads on a windsor block require coolant passage mods on the block deck/heads. Your useing widsor heads on a windsor block...No mods necessary for your application.
