Hey Mavaholic... Is this one of the Sprint Pintos? For sale at www.collectorcartraderonline.com $795 in Florida Seth
I agree with littleredtoy.I feel great when someone recognizes my car as a comet and not a maverick.though i love mavs thats not what i have and it just makes me feel weird when someone says hey nice maverick.i guess its just me
Maverick/Comet Comparison I have always been slightly offended when someone says "Hey, nice Maverick", too. I finally posted this page on my website: Maverick/Comet Comparison
I think that having a seller that has experience in older classics also plays a role in this. I also, think that the pinto will be as collectible as the maverick/comet. Heck, I like the little suckers aswell. A tidbit that just recently my mom told me, was that mom and dad had a pinto runabout, dad was a shadetree mechanic, and some how put an extra gas tank in the hatchback part of the car. Of course that was before they knew the whole rearending fireworks display.
""If someone spends 10 grand fixing up a Yugo, it's STILL a Yugo and not worth squat"" That's not true. It's worth whatever somebody is willing to pay for it. That's true with every commodity, whether it is diamonds or Mavericks. There were 11 bids on that car for $4000 or more. That guarantees that two people(at least) think that car was worth it. If the guy who bought it decides to sell it on Ebay next week, it will bring about the same money. While it may not be worth more than $3000 to you TL, it clearly is to other people. That it what the market is bearing. That means the car is worth more. BTW, I am in the automotive publishing business, and those value guides are not well researched. If you just posted eBay results, you would have a far more accurate guide. Quite often they just raise prices on a percentage basis, not paying attention to trends and model popularity. As the values of Mustangs and Camaros and Chevelles go through the roof, people turn to Mavericks and Novas and AMXs for fun cars that don't cost as much. Even nice AMXs now are being sold in the mid-teens on Ebay.
I never argued the fact that there are people who think it's worth it and are willing to pay that price for a car like that. I STILL maintain that the buyer did not get their money's worth. That's my opinion and I'm stickin' to it. By the way, AMX's are factory musclecars which were produced in limited quantities, therefore automatically worth more than a Maverick, which was not a muscle car off the dealer lot...it of course is easily modified to become such. It was a budget priced car for people who couldn't afford a Mustang. And as far as my Yugo theory goes; I don't care what you think, a Yugo IS NOT worth anything in the USA...PERIOD. Even if someone spends $50,000 on it. One might as well open a window and start throwing wads of cash out for the wind to carry away. Let's not get ridiculous here...
Yugo Convertible How about a very rare Yugo Convertible. I guarantee it would get more people gathering around it than a Maverick at a car show ... http://www.highway-one.com/Classifieds/Yugo/GreenYugoCab.html
I don't know about that...the fact is; Yugo's fall apart, Mavericks don't (unless abused). Brand new Yugos fell apart within just a few months of driving them off the dealer lot. They're junk, and most Americans know it. They are best suited for for poor countries who cannot afford decent cars or the fuel required to run them. I used to see Yugos in the junkyards after just two years of service...they were NOT wrecked either...just quit working and weren't worth fixing, so off to the parts bin and crushers they went...
I remember reading the Consumer Reports article on them when they were first introduced. The line I remember most was "not a bargan at any price". I think it was Hot Rod that had a pro street yugo in it a few years back.
No offense TL, and since you stated that you don't care what I think, this will probably fall on deaf ears, but you do not seem to grasp basic economics and the laws of supply and demand in your responses. While the Yugo is an extreme example(windsheild wipers blowing off during test drives, windows leaking from the factory, etc), something is worth whatever somebody esle is willing to pay for it. Period. While I consider diamonds a huge waste of time and money, it's justa a damn clear rock, the market says I am out of line with most the rest of the world. Diamonds aren't worth it to me, but DeBeers doesn't care, and I don't set the market. What something is worth to YOU is irrelevent. NADA doesn't publish a "TL's Used Car Market Value Guide". They attempt to publish a guide that reflects actual sales prices from actual transactions. So, while you think that the Mav in that auction was not worth it, the fact that someone else did makes it so.
I agree with you MP, "worth" and "value" are basically what the market will bear..it is all perception. I have seen this while working for Toys-R-Us...remember the Tickle Me Elmo craze? I remember before that Christmas season we had some and they just sat on the shelves...suddenly there was a shortage and the public perception was that they were "rare" and everyone had to have one...next thing you know they were selling on Ebay( I believe it was around then) for hundreds and thousands of dollars. Once Christmas was over and supplies became more plentiful the ridiculousness ended and there they sit on the shelves again.... I guess my point is this: today's value of something can fluctuate greatly regardless of manufacturing cost. People collect all kinds of crap. A Maverick is just like anything else...worth only what other people think it's worth. Did some low production Shelby Mustang cost more to manufacture than a lowly '72 Maverick? Doesn't really matter...more people think that the Shelby Mustang is worth more today and that's what counts. Now, if you are thinking of future value the Mustang would probably be a better investment than a Maverick if you look at it's track record...however as time goes by, Mavericks are harder to come by because many were scrapped since the Mav was not really know as something collectible. There are always those people that like to have something unique and that's what may drive the prices up.(In its day, the Mav was certainly not unique here in MI, but today they are few and far between!) I would have had to see that Mav in Arizona to check out how nice it really was before forking over $4600...but being the nutty Mav guy that I am, I may just have paid it if it was nice enough! No flames intended towards anyone...just saw all the discussion and decided to throw some comments on the pile...
"Max", You're just stating the obvious. See, I KNOW that someone thought it was worth it and I KNOW that someone paid the $4600 for the car. I KNOW that something is worth whatever someone else is willing to pay for it and bekieve it or not, I wasn't born yesterday; I KNOW about "supply & demand". MOST people in the USA would not pay $4600 for that Maverick that was on eBay. It's great that 11 people bid on it and at least two thought it was worth over $4000, but that HARDLY reflects the nations car-buying population. I guess we'll agree to disagree on this matter. Incidently, I AGREE with you on the diamond thing. They mean nothing to me, you can't drive them, live in them, or eat them. I have no desire to ever own one. But since the general population thinks they're highly desireable, they fetch high-dollar (extremely high). Hey, I wish the mass population loved Mavericks as much as I do, but it's just not reality...
By the way... Since some of you put so much stock in what N.A.D.A. says, the High value for a '72 Maverick with 302 is listed as $3400. So where did the other $1200 come from? They are basically only $400 higher than what my estimation was. And they are talking about a car that is in good all around condition, which includes the interior. For $4600, that interior should have been nearly flawless, at least having new carpet, dashpad, seat upholstery and steering wheel...
Please guys. Enough is enough. All of you are right in different aspects and clearly make strong arguments for what you believe. Don't get me wrong, I admire someone with opinions, but this has gone for far too long arguing about the same things. Any car, old or new, is worth whatever someone wants to pay for it. If they don't think it's worth it, it's not. But if they do think it's worth it, it is. Yugo, Maverick, Pacer, Gremlin, BelAir, Galaxie, F-Series, Maurader, etc, etc..... Whatever car it is, it has a value to the owners/potential owners of that one, particular car. Different cars attract different people, and thus different people, with different views, determine who will pay what for a particular car. As far as the Maverick on Ebay goes, I hope whoever bought it is happy with their Mav. Please guys, lets end this on a good note. This bickering is getting old. -Corbin
Who the hell cares what most of the US thinks about Mavericks? After all, most people don't like them. I'm sure you guys have heard something like, "Why'd you spend all that money fixing up a MAVERICK of all things?" If other people's opinions are so important, none of you guys should own a Maverick. Of course, that's a load of crap because we all like them and that's all that matters. Not to mention the fact that a bunch of people are willing to spend a surprising amount of money on Maverick parts and cars nowadays. Fixing up a Maverick isn't an investment. It's not a stock or bond, or a mutual fund. It's a hobby, it's fun, it's somewhere to express creativity and hone your skills. As far as the diamond thing...women love them for the same reason they hate being fat, norms in society. Somewhere along the line some smart guy convinced some women they needed diamonds and now they've all convinced themselves they need them, even though they're ridiculously overpriced and worthless.
