If you have a flat tappet cam, the lifters were changed along with the cam. You cannot, under any circumstances run old lifters on a new flat tappet cam. You can run new lifters on an old cam. Leave the lifters be, unless you're going to change the cam too. Ticking at startup is completely normal for high mileage cams and lifters.
