Hi everyone it’s been a long time since I posted. Nice to be back. I finally cleaned the garage and found my 73 Maverick. I was never very happy with the way it started it so I thought it would be a good time to check things over. I put in a new diaphragm and rubber check valve. ( turned out the the originals really weren’t that bad). I also disconnected the fuel hose and connected a line to it to check the fuel pump. It took two - 3 second cranks to get fuel to the outlet, keeping in mind it wasn’t started this winter. I removed the Fram fuel filter and blew through to make sure it was clear. However when screwed it back on it dripped gasoline where the filter contacts the carb. I snugged it carefully to its positive stop and it still dripped. I checked the carb body carefully for cracks but everything is OK. I’m planning to buy another filter. Is there supposed to be an O ring or something to keep it from leaking? I tried some tape, knowing that could be bad, but it just squeezed it out while trying to screw it in. Aside from the leak, it’s hard to start and I have to pump the throttle to get it to catch. I did notice the jets of fuel when operating the accelerator pump. The plugs are good. The photo shows the filter screwed into the carb. The compression clip was not on when I took the photo. There is a compression point, an inside bevel that seats and seals the new filter. Not really made to take on and off after they get compressed together. When you remove an old filter you are supposed to replace it with a fresh one. I think when you get the new filter it will solve your problem. And I pulled a pic of a new filter and it looks like it does indeed have a gasket. At least the picture shows one.
Uhhh I guess no one told you the gas has to be pumped two or three times befor starting? Especially cold. If everything is just right they'll usually fire on a hot restart, but once engine has partially cooled, may take a pump or two.
