you can also put 31 spline axles in a 8". we do it all the time. get 31 spline axles for a 65 mustang. cut 1/4" off the splines. auburn makes a 31 spline posi for the 8" we stock it if you cant find it.

So its basically a new bearing support and main cap for the diff? Will that 9" one fit? And finally by posi do you mean an LSD? I'm guessing it will only have an open diff in as standard but I would definately want an LSD if you could supply one- cost?

i just checked and the 9" cap will not fit the 8". sorry about the missinformation. the bolt spacing is different. the pinion support will help. and yes by posi i do mean lsd. i have the 31 spline auburn lsd for the 8" for $480.00

Thanks for the info, how many splines will my standard one have, and are the outer ends a direct fit when changing? Also will your LSD take the standard crown wheels if I want to change ratios? If the 31spline shafts are better I may have to source them too...

the stock axle splines are 28 spline.
the 31 spline axles will fit the 5 lug 8" housing ends, not the 4 lug ones.
the lsd i have works with standard 8" ring gears (crown wheels) so you wont have any problem changing ratios.
the 31 spline axle is beter because its biger. it has more surface area wich gives it more strength. i can get you the axles if you cant find them. they cost $300 for the pair. those are bare, no bearings, studs, or retainer plates.

Cool thanks for all the info. Mine is a 5 stud so will be ok. I take it the bearings etc are slightly larger if the 31 spline shafts are bigger too, if I mod'd the axle with an LSD, 31 spline shafts and big bearing support, I could machine a bigger rear support too it should easily handle the power I will be throwing at it!

the bearings are the same. the 28 spline steps down to smaller diameters as it gets closer to the splines. the 31 has the larger diameter all the way down.

just drilling the cap bolt holes for 1/2 bolts will make it stronger. if you can machine a billet steel cap then go for it. you could probly sell them if you wanted to.

bryant I have been hearing moser is having issues with axles.....any truth to it??? I saw where somebody posted they twisted a set of moser axles on this site on one of these 8 inch threads.....I have dutchmans 28 spline for my 8 inch for mine but we got 31 spline mosers for my lil bros 9 inch 331 stroker with 200 shot of nos.....I would hate to cause damage when I could yank them now and put some in......if the rumors are true that is?

yes mosers are easyer to twist than dutchman, currie, strange, and mark williams. ive seen it hapen a couple of times. if its a street car, they will do just fine, but if your puting some real power down with some real traction you would be well advised to change those mosers.

strange and mark williams are the best that you can get. also there is summers bros. they are just as good. they are a smaller company that really gives you good customer service.
