Installing a 4 barrel

    So it seems. I'm looking for one in my price range. This Holley was on a running, driving vehicle so I know it's good. It was literally running down the street last August and has been wrapped up since then in storage. I cleaned and lubed it then installed it. I was horrified by the fuel hemorrhaging like it was. Maybe the jets are too large. I don't know. It didn't leak and it gave instant response with zero lag. The problem was that the primaries weren't responding as they should have. I tried to set them so the flapper was open a fraction of an inch so it would run easier but the secondaries were flooding the engine and creating acrid gassy black smoke. I even turned the screws all the way in and it still did it. I backed them out and it still did it. I turned the choke til it held the flapper slightly open and it was a little better but the secondaries still gushed fuel. I have never had a carb give me such a fit.

    The 2bbl went on without a spacer because my EGR block was burned completely through. on the passenger side rear. If I get another spacer it might help with the aggravating pulsing? The carb sits about an inch lower now. The throttle linkage is very close to rubbing the manifold but doesn't. I think I need another block...

    Also, what is up with the tubes running from the exhaust manifold on the passenger side to the carb? Both are off my manifold anyway, can't I just plug the holes? One tube is flared on one end and is made for a rubber hose to the carb on the other. The other one rusted off the top of the manifols and also goes to the carb somewhere, it has heat fabric on it.

    Because you have deleted the EGR system you need to put bigger jets in it. About two sizes (numbers) bigger is usually perfect.
    Did you plug the hole in the manifold for the EGR or just put the gasket over the hole?
    You can drill it and tap for 3/8" pipe plug (I am going by memory here so if you can use 1/4" use it) and then run a flush fitting pipe plug into the hole. Then your gasket won't burn out and ruin your carb the same way it burnt the adapter.

    There were two problems with that 4 bbl. One was a sticking needle/seats from sitting up (even wrapped up in storage these things will get gummed up) and/or the powervalve diaphram ruptured from getting dried out from sitting in storage. If the idle mixture screws aren't responding, then you have the primary butterflys open too much, exposing the transition slots, closing the throttle to just where it's barely moved off the fully closed position should cure that. Those two tubes coming from the right side exhaust manifold are the choke heaters, or at least the smallest one is (it's about 1/8" in diameter) Just plug em. And wire the choke open.
