O.K......first off....when somebody doesn't price their item and wants ME to name a price....I start out at a dollar and go from there. Second.......sounds a little high....would need pictures to fairly judge the value.
Something else to consider is to ask yourself what do you want out of the project? Do you want a show car? Do you want a good driver? This car sounds like a major undertaking which is fine. Remember however that the more you pay for the car up front, that's gonna add into the resto cost. I just did a 72 Grabber clone last summer and while the car was solid, I had to get all of the Grabber parts. Once said and done, the project cost me about $9000.00 and I got my car for $1500.00! It sounds like a great optioned original car! We all know those are getting rare. I have to agree with the assessments some of the other guys and say it's about a $1500.00-$2000.00 car at most. Desire can sometimes dictate price. Hell, look at the insanity that goes on at Barret-Jackson! Just my opinion. Hope it works out!
I wish i had some pics to share, I might get back over there after lunch and snap a few and post them later this evening. Robert
definitely seems high to me. i think i'd keep on looking for that price. too much work to get it up to par.
Way to high IMO, I would have offered the guy $400 from the description you gave. Take that 4 grand you were going to spend and go on ebay I'm sure you will be able to get alot more car for the money.
Consider entering the Maverick relocation program? Sounds like a parts car to me. There are plenty of Mavericks and Comets still being used in SoCal. Rust free ones, with original paint. Good drivers, I know that they sell for under $3000. Often under $1500. I regularly see them in junk yards too. Still kicking myself for not getting the floor shift parts and bucket seat brackets from that one in Wilmington. Shipping to the east coast or midwest rust belt, is probably $800-$1000, or less. Extensive rust repair would cost much more than that.
Here are the pictures, I loaded them up as a zip on my gallery site http://fordmaverick.info/coppermine/thumbnails.php?album=5 Here are a few I took. Robert
I think those pictures are very encouraging. It looks like a great candidate for a rotissery restoration. I would say the major issues have come from the water leaks as mentioned. I do not think you were crazy with your $4500 offer - a bit high for most people. But hey - how often have you seen a car optioned like that? Add up some of the costs if you had to buy those interior pieces, grabber hood, ect - and that $4500 gets smaller all the time. Since he is the original owner - does he state the OD mileage is original? Anyway - it is a great find. I hope you can make a deal with him.
The biggest problem he isnt moving off the $6,000 price. He had an autocrafters catalog in the trunk, there was also a list of stuff he had ordered back in 2000, mostly door and window rubber. Robert
$6,000 is def, too high. hang tight and he will come down because there is no way anyone else would give him that much for it. It does look like a good car to start a resto on. BTW judging by the blackout stripe on the hood it is a `1971 NOT a '72. 1972 I believe was a two piece decal, 1971 was a one piece paint on stripe. That hood at least has the 1971 hood striping.
To each their own (meaning I wouldn't pay $4,500 for it - someone with more money than Trumph, like Eric, would though ). Got a picture of the engine bay?
I'll just wait till he comes around, hell I have 7 setting in the yard and a possible deal for 2 74's and a 73 comet GT..... Robert
