Dan, I've have always found that the most reliable, least trouble, everyday horsepower monsters did it turning no more than 6800 RPM. Less broken parts, less tweaking, less maintenace, less everything. To me, the most economical horsepower is that 625 HP, 460 stroked to 514, crate engine from Ford Racing. It does it with 9.8 compresssion, reaches 625 HP a 6250 RPM (600 ft./lbs of torque at 4800 RPM). This engine is $8,400 at Summit. You just have to add a carb, distributor, and exhaust. Yep, you have to go with a Mustang II front end.

If the drag Mav I'm building was going to be strictly a bracket racer, the above setup would absolutely be the most reliable and consistent. Nothing beats a big block for bracket racing consistency. However, I would like to possibly race in a class or two with the FFW, NMRA, etc. The classes I'm interested in will allow a 460 block block because it is period correct, but I have to be using a stock suspension. Bye, bye 460 idea. Since modifications to the stock suspension, such as cutting the shock towers are allowed, I'm back to thinking stroked 351W.

Since I tend to be different  (quiet Frank), I'm really looking at building an FE. Since new and better parts are available for the FE block, and you can build a 428 Cobra Jet new, I'm leaning a little in that direction. Still have to go Mustang II though. But, that may be the best way.:smash::clap:

Just my opinions and ramblings. Ask 20 people about this subject and you'll get 30 answers.:slap:

    What do you WANT?

maverick73, you can get a lot out of a 347 stroker.....I would guess around 350 to 400 horses and still run pump gas if you build it right.....now, if you want to up the compression on the little motor then the horses will raise but then you get into a octane problem.....I know a guy the has a 347 in his car and he is getting around 600 horse at the flywheel with a stock block.

Man, you guys really got my mind a working. Lots of really really good things to think about here.
    Here is what I want
    1. A stock appearing car,, key word is appearing
    2. Would really like to retain the shock towers,, guess that is the old school in me
    3. I did read the M&F on the 427 vs 428 , I am leaning towards a 427
    4. The shop that built the motor in my Stallion is who I will have build this motor. yes I buy small stuff from jegs or summit. The big stuff I buy locally, gotta support the community. BTW, he builds motors for tons of people we all know, he just does not want recognition, or for that matter anymore customers.
    5. I will supercharge this engine
    6. I am probably going with an automatic ( yuck!! but I have to face reality, I broke my neck in an accident in my Stallion when it was brand new. I am slowly losing good use of my hands and feet, thankgod it didnt happen all at once when I was 18!)
    7. This will probably be the last car I build, so for me it will have to be my best.
    8. How fast do I want to go? I wonder if I can get into the 9's in the qtr, yes I will have a full rollcage.
    9. I would love to drive this car to the Roundup, or anywhere for that matter. It will not be a daily driver, but I want to drive it whenever and however far I want.
    10. Am I crazy? YES! and I hope I never grow up!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks
    Dan

sounds like a great recipe for a turbocharged/EFI stroker windsor. 9's? No problem!

Never had it on a dyno....but I have a performance caculator that I found on the net and it figures somewhere around 530-540 to the ground.

    specs:
347, Eagle crank & rods, SRP pistons, Lunati roller cam(do not remember the #'s, cam card is somehwere:confused: but lets just say its big:D ) Manley pushrods, Lunati roller rockers(1.6) AFR 205 heads. Super Victor intake. Quick Fuel Technology custom carb (875cfm).
Its a 13.5 to 1 motor. I have a main girdle and JOMAR rocker girdle. Canton oil pan, CSI water pump, HOWE radiator, with electric fan. Holley Blue pump. All MSD ignition. 6AL box, Blaster 3 coil and start/rpm retard box. Front plate and mid-plate. C4, 9 inch(spooled) with 4.11's. coil-over/ ladder bar rear suspension.
1 5/8 primary headers(which is KILLING my power) but I cannot afford custom headers right now. But I would gues-tamate about 50 horses lost to the small tubes(atleast thats what a friends desktop dyno said). I was wanting 600 horses out of it and I guess with some bigger headers I would be pretty close.

Yeah, but thats the great things about having a carb made. I just called them up and told them my set-up, they made the carb. to match.....only thing I had to do was change the idle bleeds after I got the carb, they missed that by a little. Other than that it was perfect, no jet changes or anything.

You may have to "trim" the shock towers.
