    First:
CDs are going the way of the 8-track.
Why use a CD or even a changer when you can get 300 songs on a iPod wannabe.
I have a 2 gig MP3 player with all sorts of bells and whistles (video and all) for just over 100 bux. The thing is smaller than most stereo remotes.

I set up mine with stock radio to feed through an FM channel, but I am still not satisified.
    I have changed gears.
I am going to pick up a 4 channel amp to hide under the dash to feed the front and rear speakers. Then I am going to use a patch cord with the pair of RCA ends on the amp side, and a single stereo headphone jack on the other to plug into the MP3 player.
Currently, through the stock stereo, it works great, but I am limited and the FM modulator isn't always noise free. I have a discreetly place piece of velcro in the car to hold the player when I am not handling it.

Anyway, my player has volume control and integrated FM tuner (for emergencies), so I am going the direct route and leaving the stock radio for decoration.
Also, I intend to feed another amp from the outputs on the 4 channel to run my subs.
Pretty much what I have now, just taking the head unit out of the loop.

So, hundreds of songs, FM tuner for emergency, stock radio, digital quality, no commercials, no bulky CDs, inexpensive, and easy to hide.
CDs are already ancient history to me.

without Comet now just keeping in touch
Good Point, you can by an am/fm stereo at target right now that allows you to plug an iPod or mp3 directly into the front of the unit for under $140. I went with a unit form Target, that literally cost me $40, an dI have an FM converter for my Nano, It's kind of cool because it doesn't have presets, and it is analog tuning with digital display, it looks more modern but has the "flavor" of the old stereos from the 70's. the only thing about it is that soem stions drift and i have to retune it it.
At $40 buck though not bad,i am going to upgrade to the $130 one soon, so I won't need the fm transmitter.

Once I have a 4 channel amp to do the work, I intend to re-install the stock AM radio.

I was going to use the 4 channel amp to boost the power of the stock Stereo, but then thought about just cutting it out and going with the pod plugged directly to the amp.
As long as you have a volume control, the pod becomes the head unit.

Btw: Mine is a Sansa 2 gig. It is tiny and inexpensive. Love it.
Even the way it is now, running through the FM modulator, I use the pod for volume control. I just put the head unit volume up to the max I would ever want it, then turn it down with the pod. It is easier that way.

i agree, but i figure most stereo system have cd players. most the mock am radios that ATOmonkey posted an have auxilary conection for and iPod, which is good cause mine is about 2000 songs strong. what i am most concerned with is keeping a stock look to the interior and keeping it simple.
