that sounds cheap for a...roped in windshield...(y)
you might want to go ahead and check with them...:yup:
I had to check a few different places before I found a shop that could install our type of glass/seals and use the right sealer...
most shops said...butyl??? "they don't use that type sealer anymore"...or "that rope thing, we can do that...
when I called...Billys Mobil Glass... and asked about installing a Maverick windshield (I had the glass) ...Billy said..."I'ill rope it in for $100 but I need to pick up a tube of...butyl sealer...on the way over...:thumbs2:
this one hasn't leaked so far but you're right...they are hard to seal...:yup:

    ...:drive:...

The problem I'm having here in ocala is, all the local glass company's want to install what they sell but none of them will install a rope in windshield... So they will not even order it for me, I offered them full installed price and I would just pick it up, they all said NO..... For now I bought a good used one and Anita & I installed it our self....

Same crap here, Safelite refuses to use butyl, and I refuse to let them do it, Glass Doctor is the one that said he would do it properly and thats who I went with but they can't locate glass, the place they ordered from is in Ohio, my old wingshield was turning white around the edges also and after 40 years of sandblasting was kinda hard to see through at night, somehow it :16suspect got cracked upon removal, I have both front and back glass weatherstripping and am about to go hunt a tube of butyl and do the back glass myself.

Thanks for ur advice/input Frank. I have followed some of ur past post regarding this topic and saw it done on TV. Learn a lot..
I will ck w/ them, but ur probably right, they may not do old car rope in windshields. I have a friend who has built several old cars and has some experience in installing glass. If he can't do it he knows someone who can. Right now he's almost done w/ a vry nice 49 Caddy slant back w/ LS hi-po power train. After I consult him I just may PU the glass and self install.

My wife and I installed the windshield and back glass with no leaks. Only wish I had the metal supports for the windshield. None there when I pulled it and I didn't know they were supposed to be there.

Got the windshield from The Glass Doctor without delay but that was over two years ago.

Had The Glass Doctor installed it, they would have used urethane sealer. Said it was required by DOT. Fortunately, I learned otherwise here.

Think only tinted windshield was available, but that was what I wanted. The new tint was a nice blue rather than the faded yellow.

You would think the Insurance company would help out a bit on this, I mean it is a liability for my fully insured car to be sitting out in the weather with nothing more than a tarp covering it, I am in Florida and we do get pretty bad storms here, there is actually one supposed to be coming through tonight, and with a totally new interior, I think if it gets wet, somebody's gonna pay and it ain't me! not to mention the gauge cluster, fuse box and wiring, I have called the insurance company all afternoon and all I can get is a runaround about it, of course they (the Hartford) have Safelite in their back pocket and probably are mad because I won't allow Safelite to do the install, I just talked to another shop who said he can order the windshield and have it next day but won't install and I would have to pay out of pocket for the glass ($230.00) and then find an installer, I am having too much trouble finding Butyl Sealer already, I have also called every auto parts in town and finally think I located some, it's at the paint supply store I get all my paints from!..... this is why I had called the Glass Doctor before Christmas and told them I was gonna need the Windshield and even gave them the Claim Number, to avoid this very kind of delay!
Sorry about the  but I am getting a bit  about it all and needed to vent a bit.

What type of butyl sealer are you guys that have installed your windshields using? Tube or Tape? and what is it's consistency if out of the caulk tube?

I had my choice of tape or tube, I chose tube because I know how to use it better than tape, coming out of the tube it's pretty thick, kinda like a dry peanut butter, when using the gun don't try and go too fast on pushing it out, if you do it will get around the plunger in the tube, you don't need to ask how I know that!, it will wipe off with a dry cloth but of course it's 70 degrees here and I'm sure temperature affects the consistency of it also, I just got my back glass in this morning and I think it will be ok as far as leaking goes, I kinda spread the butyl out a bit also, the tube I bought was $18.00.

I used tubes. Cut the tip to get a fine line coming out. After it was installed, I pulled the gasket away from the glass on the outside and ran a tiny bead of sealer down both sides and across the bottom between the glass and gasket. Then open up the tip and apply it liberally all the way around between the gasket and body.

Its very soft and messy coming out of the tube. About like tooth paste. You can clean it off the gasket and glass with a little lacquer thinner but I would not want to get it on the headliner.

This is all great info guys. This info is giving me the inspiriation to do my own glass. I have all the stuff needed cept the adhesive, windshield, motivation and favorable weather.
I wud rather do it so I can take care of any rust issues in my garage at my leisure. Im wondering if anyone has used the tape and has any comments on it.
