With the exception of the Pontiacs, such as the GTO, I never saw any painted bumpers in the 60's. In the 70's, because of the 5 mph safety law, painted bumpers began appearing on all cars, beginning in '73. My '72 Sprint Stang also has a body color front bumper. None of the cars I remember seeing in those days had painted black bumpers. Maybe as stated, it was an '80's thing.

Of course, by living long enough to have seen cars in the '50's, '60's, '70's, '80's, etc, I am old and my memory isn't always my best feature. lol.

Mine are black, done by a previous owner. Door handles too. I've been thinking about stripping them but I'm afraid of what I might find.

I actually think they don't look bad, since there's so much other black trim on the car. But when I get another set of bumpers they're probably going back to chrome.

Black bumpers was just to make the look better then rusty bumpers. A lot of guys didn't have extra money to fix there car properly. No one wanted to pick up there girl friend up in a junky car. It didn't impress the parents much eather. There was also alot of Mustangs, Mavericks, Pintos, Cameros, Fairlanes in a nice coat of all gray primer! If you couldn't paint it at least it was all one color. Primer coat body, black bumpers, no money but at least you had a car and it was loved! My best friend and I painted his 1960 Chevy pick- up canry yellow with 3 inch paint brushes and rust-olum. Hey, it didn't look to bad from a few houses down the street.

The Blue Maverick in my signature line had satin black (not completely flat and not gloss) bumper just for the exact reason already mentioned. The Front bumpers on mavericks were notorious for getting 2 round rust spots on them directly under the seam where the hood meets the fenders, water ran down that channel between the hood and the fenders and cause a drip on the bumpers that just ate away the chrome and left one rust spot on each side of the bumper... The guy that painted the bumpers Black on the maverick in my signature, did it because there wasn't any place around our area to buy new or used maverick bumpers that were in decent condition AND there were no local rechroming shops during that time because they were getting a hard way to go from the environmentalist because of the chemicals they used and because of that the price for rechroming in the late 80's early 90's in my area at least was through the roof....Most of the new cars on the market by the late 80's and early 90's had body colored or and accent color on the bumper. in fact my 88 Escort GT was dark blue with dark gray accents and the bumpers were covered by the spoiler/ground effects that was dark gray as well...looked just like this one...

The Dark Blue metalic paint actually looked good with the satin black bumpers on that maverick...IMHO, but more imprtant like someone else said it looked a lot better than rusty, peeling, chrome on a freshly painted car...
