I just got a great idea. This post was originaly flat tappet vs Roller I say through them into a wrestling ring and see who wins
Ok guys, there's a local mustang guy who message me, he's got a '88 HO from an '88 mustang with just the crank, rods, pistons, and stock cam for $100. Everything else has been removed. Is this just as good as an '86 block? He says he lost some oil pressure but never had any rod knock before he tore it down, I would be having a machine shop go over the whole block. Sound like a good deal?
I would just do a ghetto re-ring and hone it out if its in good shape. Like Mavaholic said, pop the main caps off and see what the crank looks like. Also pull all the lifters out and make sure the rollers look good. Even if you dont reuse the stock lifters and cam, checking the condition of the lifters will give you another indication of the condition of the engine. The 88 engine has forged pistons with valve reliefs. The 86 engines had flat tops and lots of aftermarket cams will give you piston to valve clearance issues. IMO, an 88 is more desirable.
Well, I talked to the guy and he's no bs'er. He told me he was running at the track when he lost about 10 psi on the way home. There was no knock so he changed the oil and found the engine to be running 10 psi lower than usual. He cut open the oil filter and found a lot of bearing material. When I said I'm going to re-use the stock rods and crank, I meant I'm going to just buy the stock stuff or trade from someone. For $100, I really just want the block, what do you guys think?
