after talking with a TON of people on this subject matter, what do you guys think if I just took it into a reptable body shop, had the rust and dings fixed, then through a so-so paint job on it, and got it running???

10 g's is a TON of cash, and while my mother has committed, she also trusts my judgement.

while I think it would be super cool to have a completely pristine hardcore show trophy, I would also be completely paranoid to drive it, which, truthefully is all we want to do.

what do you all think? Should I be more mild on the resto? either way, I've got the funds coming.

you know it's not too late to enter! the car doesn't need to be a "show car" heck i enter my stock car this year with the 30 year old paint on it :p

it ain't no fun if you don't drive it! if you worry about it i say its not worth it. i drive my car. thats why it looks like hell when you look too close! but i say who cares! its not a trailer queen.

jeremy, go to a reputable shop and get an estimate from them and then go from there. see what the difference is. it sounded to me that after the $10 grand you'd still have a lot of work to do underneath. if you don't go all the way with it, it would probably look out of place or maybe a better word is unfinished. good luck with it.:)

well guys, got the final go ahead from my mother. Deals on, and she's ready to go.

I'll be making arrangements next week for them to pick up my car. Since they are partially sponsering me, there will be a massive photo documentary on the entire process, starting off with it being used as a shelf in the garage, lol

we're going balls to the wall, the full deal. All paint and bodywork, inside and out, all undercoatings (trunk, hood, jams, EVERYTHING) will be coated with this special coating, I forget what it's called, then the car sprayed with what should be a perfect paint job.

I've got a 5.0 roller block that I'll be putting the finishing touches on, then we'll be either spraying or powdercoating everything mechanical.

From there, the interior will be done. Interior and mechanical come out of my pocket, so I've got some saving to do.

I'm going to have the stretch the entire process out over a year to help us with the $$$ part of it.

You're going to be seeing a WHOLE hell of a lot of me around in the near future as I scramble like hell to find interior and mechanical restoration parts.

Car hopefully will be ready in time for next years fun ford festival at knotts in buena park, cali.

Don, we'll be doing all the mechanical stuff there (I will be) and be painting/powdercoating it there. when the car leaves the shop, it should be turnkey.

    restored

That sounds like a fair price for a job like that. I restored my '69 Mach 1. I hired a body and paint man to do that part of the job while I assisted, Its a lot of work. Your paint job speaks for body work. You may get more negitive remarks than positive because of cost. What matters is what you want and what makes you happy. Remember, most people out there do not understand what it takes to properly restore a car. My Maverick is orginal with only 34,000 miles. It has never had any paint or body work. It even has a few dings here and there. Most people don't believe it they think i'm lieing. I say you get what you pay for! I can,t wait to see you car when done, Have fun!

thanks for the support, and I agree a lot don't understand what fully goes into a project like this. It's got to be stripped to the shell, every last bolt, sand blasted, then countless hours spent perfectly massaging the entire body of EVERY ding and ripple, and restoring, not replacing all the chrome parts, painting, then reassembly.
