duraspark jamie get a TFI coil while your at the yard and don't forget the connector for it better than GMs HEI
Ron, hate to sound stupid (do that enough already), but whats a TFI coil? I was planning on just buying a new coil for whatever kind of car I get the ignition system out of. Even with buying the new Module, pick up for the distributor and a new coil it is still cheaper then the pertronix depending on what I can get the dist. and harness for at the junkyard.
hey jamie type in duraspark on the web and you will find a lot of places with wiring i did this with my 302 and it seems to run better i set my plugs at 50 thousands the bronco site shows the coil and explains about the ford/gm coils ron
module jamie i only paid 12.00 for my module make sure you get the one with a blue wire connector Advance is about the same money
After dealing with distributor issues in new new motor, I've decided that it's probably a good idea replace the distributor, even if you are going to put an ignitor module in the car. My 30 year old distributor was way worn out -- wobbly and you could barely turn it by hand. I swapped it for a rebuilt ford distributor at the parts store for $40 and solved all my distributor-related problems.
dan, "The Flame-Thrower Billet Distributor also contains an Ignitor II but is working fine "... what you got the plugs gapped at? ...frank...
i know about 6 people that have MSD distributor and i have one as well....and i have never heard anyhting bad about MSD..... the single point dist i had in the mav before MSD....i had to buy a new point about 1 every month or so....and set it ....and check it ....it got to be a pain just my
I don't have the money for anything MSD at this point. Maybe down the road sometime. Right now I gotta do as much as I can with as little as possible. The NC junkyards turned up nothing, and the one that does have old cars was closed on Sunday when I went up there. I'm going to the Pull-A-Part down by Terry's tomarrow. I remember there was a green 1978 Mercury Monarch sitting right next to the yellow 4 door Mav we were pulling parts off of. I looked under the hood and it had a 250 and the box that said Dura Spark II right on it. Hope it's still there.
jamie, there is a yard in Griffin that has all old cars. if you would like to go Fri. morning i could meet you up that way. they have 12 mavs. send me a p. m. and let me know if you can go. don't tell... terry or earl...they will want to go..frank...
Frank, that would be awesome. Can you P.M. me the address of it so I can punch it in Map Quest, if you know it? The earlyer we can meet the better.
I have found the concensus on the Petronix stuff to be - buy the Ignitor, not the Ignitor II. Guys in the Galaxie Club are running the Ignitor in 427's and 428's and loving 'em. I buy rebuilt distributors and put the Petronix Ignitor in them. For best performance, go with a hot coil. I've used the ones from Accel, Petronix, etc. It's gotta be high voltage.
Should be lots around, just a matter of a little searching. Besides, this swap is easy, cheap and reliable. Just make sure that what you pull out is in good shape, have a good look at everything before you take it home. Then buy a new cap (with brass terminals), rotor, wires and plugs (if it was time to change plugs, otherwise clean them and open up the gap) when permits. You won't be disappointed.
