wax on...wax off.... riporter, the way I brought back my paint was a long process, but cheap!! One weekend of rubbing compound, red stuff,(lightly and use a rag and bucket o' water to remove residue...do this only once), then go over with polishing compund,white stuff,(again only once and use a wet rag and water bucket for residue, change water often). I thought that made a huge difference....I don't think my paint had seen wax since 1976(when previous owner bought it used)....but a buddy of mine said he had a buffer and the compounds so.......Now this last step took about 4 hours (and a twelve pack) and we used 2 types of 3M compounds, alot of nook and crannie hand buffing, and he REALLY knew what he was doing....the car turned out great....I don't know what that last step would cost if I had to have paid for it, but it made the finish.....oh, and then about 3 coats of turtle wax, and I wax it about every 2 months....love the fact the original paint is there though, and would not trade that for much.......Robert p.s.:bananaman if chrome is gray(mine was)steel wool of SOS pads....front bumper took days with chrome polish, back bumper minutes....
WOW! Riporter, I have a 1970 mav with an I6 and 3speed tranny that I'd like to change over to an automatic, I don't need the eng. but I could use everything else (tranny,linkage, driveshaft, hoses,shifter,bellhousing ect.) please let me know what you want for it. Sounds like you have alot of fun hours ahead of you. good luck.
Bob if you'll give me a couple of weeks to get everything out and situated your more than welcome to the parts you need, Coral Gables sounds like its in South Florida and Im in South Carolina...we can make arrangements for shipping or pickup. the shifter is a 3 speed B & M on the floor. I think the transmission will hook up will bolt right back up when the V8 bell housing is taken off the tranny. I'll post a message when I get all the available parts out and situated. That should be perfect timing Bob...I'll have everything cleaned up and boxed..the tranny would fit in the trunk of a standard size car...the drive shaft would be iffy...if you got a pickup that would be good.
Thx Comet dad for the info on bringing the paint back to original shine. The rubbing compound worked wonders, although I tried a few different ways, putting it on very wet and concentrated seem to work the best...took about 6 times before the shine really started to come out but when it did it was surprising. To be honest I doubt the paint job had ever seen wax. I would only tackle a small section at a time this seemed to help also. Im halfway done, and the side by side comparison is pretty amazing, I really want to keep the original paint on it and it looks like this process will let me do that. Thx Again Rick:bananaman
Hey, nice Is that the engine out of Molly? Looks good. That's the same valve covers that I just bought for mine. Looks very nice, almost exactly like mine, except I bought a chrome oil pan. Are you going to use headers or manifolds? Just curious. Looks really good! Country
Tx Country,Yup...thats the engine from the "Molly"...after a total reconditioning...every nut and bolt ground and polished, all new gaskets and fresh paint... Im gonna paint the raised portion of the valve covers blue also...someone attempted this but I think they used the wrong kind of paint. Hooker headers are goin back on it after I drop it in which I hope will be this week. I've painted the headers with a white ceramic 1200 degree header paint but im thinkin of having them powder coated as Ive heard they will brown after a short period of runtime. The car is up on jackstands as Im puttin the rear end from the Molly in tomorrow. On the subject of a paint scheme... not that you can tell from the picture...it looks like Im gonna be able to save the original White paint but the previous owner had some kind of aftermarket molding put on the car...hence the sanded line down the car... I was thinkin of painting a Grabber Orange stripe down this line with 2 smaller stripes above and below...thought comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated
