like a tool i ASSumed that the c4 i had waiting to be rebuilt was a small bell 157 tooth setup.i noticrd the pump bolts hold the bell on.the trans is a 1973 pan fill from a 250 six banger and i am putting it behind a roller 302. well i already bought a 157 tooth 50oz flexplate with the 10.5 inch bolt pattern, also i have a tci converter for the same bolt pattern and 26 spline.i also have a block plate i thought was for a small bell but now i am not sure. first question: is is there a way to measure the block plate to see what size bell its for? second: can i run the small bell flexplate and converter with the big bell?seems like i would have to use the block plate for the big bell and maybe the starter wont engage.i am using the starter from the 91 i got the engine from. thanks guys i kinda lost on this part.dors this all make sense cause its greek to me?
#1...250-302 (5.0) block plates are the same... #2... "can i run the small bell flexplate and converter with the big bell?" starter will not work. you need a case fill '70-'77 C-4. you can run a...big bell, 164 flex. and a 10.5 converter. hope this helps... Frank
If the pump bolts hold the bell housing to the transmission you probably have a small bell. Most large bells are held on by bolts that go into the case not the pump. You can check the depth of the bell to determine if it is a large bell or small bell.
to measure the depth do i put a straight edge across the front of the bell and measure to the face of the pump?
That is the small bell - you should use the 157 tooth flex-plate and the 10.5" bolt pattern converter.
