I didn't think axles were too awful bad, my 33 spline mosers were $295 for both. Cheap insurance for my car though, I do leave on a transbrake sometimes and I like the peace of mind.
It was about 1 year ago I looked up the price...... I looked up the price again today and your right, it is $295 but one you exchange that over to Canadian and then add shipping to where I live you get into a nasty price range that I would rather spend on a new 302. I had to rebuild the axle because the bearings were shot on the drive tire side and I wanted a locker rear end, so I did it all at once..... later this year I want to put a drain plug into the 8" so I don't have to remove the carrier to change the fluids. Maybe down the road its something to consider but at the moment the information I am getting from my peers here is that the 8" can withstand what I throw at it. Mind you I wouldn't mind owning a 347 Roush Crate Engine..... Dennis do ever really open that beast up or do you like to pust the envelope? I had to go back to that issue just to get another look at it.
Will do Steve. It will be awhile. I have the next 5 winters planned out as to what I am gonna do to my car.......I cannot remember if its winter 2 or winter 3 when I am going to addres the brake and rearend.........that is as long as what I have holds up! But I will get with you when the time comes, I have the utmost respect for you and what you have accomplished with your car! Genius and perserverance!!! Thanks, John
virtually the trans brake places the tranny in a bind applieing the clutches and band at the same time alowing the stall to come up full force until you release the button........kinda like dumping the clutch Dennis......better have a good sprag in the rear of the case
Well now that I know what a trans brake is, what is a line lock and how does it work? Thanks for the great info.
I appreciate that John !! It is hard to get a leaf spring car to hook up on a small tire with a bunch of horsepower, it takes alot of time and dedication but it's all a learning process and that's what I love about drag racing. I always wanted a backhalved 4-link car but I didn't want to go that route with Granny's old Comet, but in the future I want to do a ladder bar or 4-link Grabber. I actually love the way your car launches, real straight and even!! Honestly, I think it's awesome the times that your car is running on motor!! I wish mine would turn those kind of numbers off the juice!! As far as the t-brake, I think it's an excellent tool for the drag racer to significantly improve reaction time, 60'time, ET & MPH. However, they do cause more heat to build up in the tranny so that shortens the intervals between freshenings and yes, you better have some good parts in there to begin with. As far as i've seen, the good C4's with ALL the good parts ( not just some good parts) can cost anywhere between $1200 - $3800. But these would be considered "Race" Transmissions. JPT can give you custom gear ratios, he makes his own billet aluminum valve body's, he can make you a custom, full roller, all aluminum C4 that will dog most glides!!
OH yeah, I forgot!! A line lock can be used in several different ways for different braking applications but what most of the guys I know use them for is to do there burnout. When you activate the line lock it maintains whatever pressure is in the brake line. I have mine run in-line with the front brake line, directly out of the master cylinder. When I do my burnout I pull through the water box and then pump the brakes up and hold them. Then I activate the line lock which holds the pressure on the front brakes only. I release the brake pedal and the rear brakes release. So basically you can do your burnout without ruining your rear brakes!! I've seen some stick car guys use them to hold the car on the starting line until the green light, so they don't have to mess with the brake pedal. I think the pro stock guys use them that way also.
Thats exactly what I use mine for.....those big smokey burnouts! I tried the line lock once at the starting line........It really helped get the rp,'s up(right @ 4,000rpm), but the bad thing was they did not release quick enough and the car squatted and took a hop to the left, when I mashed the gas....kinda like a leap frog manuever. It was sitting so far sideways at the starting line I actually had to back it up away from the wall to drive it down the track..........needless to say more than my leg was shaking after that!
I run Class 1 on the pony and I love my line lock and trans brake. I also use my line lock on the line. My mustang would sometimes rock at the light, blipping me in and out, so the line lock steadies it. My delay box releases my line lock and trans brake at the same time. Once I release the button, its pedal to the floor and keep it straight, rubber side down.
thats what I have heard... but its wierd. it only does it sometimes. we even tried to duplicate it in the driveway. so I said screw it and wired up the line lock. never been a problem since. budget racing at its finest.
