I didn't figure the rotation of the pump mattered to the cover, but I didn't even go there because I was under the impression that you needed a cover for mechanical pump and dipstick.

It depends on which reverse rotation pump you choose. Not all will work with that cover.

All this makes me wonder which rotation cover I used when I replaced the engine in my pickup.

It was originally rev rotate. Of course it still is, but I believe I used the Crown Vic's standard rotate cover.

Wonder if that will ever bite me in the arse?
Thinking about the short block laying in my shop... I never took the cover off, so I AM using the 'wrong' cover. No issues yet. Anyone know?

    Oh... "Highjacking in progress!";)

The backing plate on the B50/C50 pumps allow it to be used with either style cover. The plate has a round hole instead of a slot where the coolant exits into the timing cover port. Apparently some pumps don't use the backing plate between the pump and cover and those will run into problems when used with the wrong timing cover. The gasket flanges don't match up in this case. Did you check out the late 88-up aluminum Crown Vic pumps Dave?
