    The Ford Parts Manual shows 250 6-cyl used same drums as v8 when equipped with 10 x 2 1/4 brakes in 1971 or equipped with 10 x 2 1/2 brakes in 1972 ....

    All 1972 6-cyl cars were 4-lug.

    Craig,
My Sprint has 5 lugs and its a 250. The 72 Grabber is 4 lug though. The Grabber was a 200 6 cylinder from the factory. I have seen several 72"s with 5 lug hubs over the years. Like said earlier perhaps it was an option that could be ordered. I know the hubs on the sprint are HUGE compared to the ones on my grabber. I have owned 7 or so mavs over the years and most of them 70-74 all of those were 4 lugs except two. A 73 4-door that was equiped with a 250 and the Sprint. My hubs on the sprint are way bigger though than the 73's 5 lug set up. Just throwing some more fuel on the fire.
    Thanks

I would have to speculate that your Sprint was converted to 5-lug by a previous owner. I don't know for sure if it was an option or not. More Maverick mysteries!!

This is interesting. Is there a way to check the rear end for any numbers? Anything that would let us know if the rear end was from another car? This might be a good poll for someone. I can honestly say the Sprint looks totally untouched. I mean the car has had very little done to it that I can see. Like you said, Mysterious isn't it! I will be pulling everthing apart this spring (new wheel bearings and brakes) perhaps we can find something fishy when I jump into it.

I don't know of any numbers one can look at. If you can find a build sheet for it....that would help. Maybe a History 999 report???

Check the pumpkin tag - it will ID car application but more importantly it will give you a date code that should be very close to your cars build date.

Sounds like another case of "Ford always put________[fill in the blank] on
_________ [fill in the blank] cars" :rofl2: In other words, it's risky to use "FORD" and "always" in the same sentence. :burnout:

This sounds like the best explanation to me. Bigger brakes = bigger drums, which were the 5 lug drums. :yup:

I don't know if this matters but this car was made in 9/71 but is titled as a 72

That makes sense ... new model year starts in September ... nowadays it sometimes starts much earlier ... 2008 Mustangs are already at dealers ..

The Sprint I just bought has 5 lugs. The car is a 2 owner with original paint. The suspension looks original. It is a 250. I haven't got a Marti report on it yet to see if there was a special suspension option. I doubt it since there are no other options other than the Sprint option on it.
