Its because brake shoes have more sq. inch surface contact than brake pads to help slow things down
X2... Drum brake work great if everything is working like it should. If drums been turned to far out of spec replace them.
From the factory standard was 11/16" and heavy duty was 7/8" on both 6 cyl and V8. The 71-72 V8 came with 5/8" as standard.

I painted my marker bezels satin black after getting paint. I didn't like the look. I found some NOS bezels to get the look I was looking for....

I'm thinking about 9.3 to 1 or close to it. The head bolt washers help spread the load to seal the head gasket. The 250 pushrods are 1" longer...
The C9-D6 head has a 1240cc log with 1.649" intake valves. The D7-E0 flat log is 1345cc and the hex log is 1420cc both having 1.75" intake valves....

Might as well go with pre '72 timing gear setup, actually it's a '69 part number. It's marked differently to give better valve timing....
Also could be cheap quality shoes. I like to stick to name brand shoes
