yes with higher compression you need more octane. that is why when you see guys mixing fuels and such.... also if you have to adjust your timing...
your compression is not that high so you shouldn't be having to worry that much, could be your timing that is causing your back firing problem ??...
as much as i like the hood , ive got a comet...i will have to find a different cowl hood set up.....
