cooler issue it will be a small (radior) looking pice on the front of the rad with the trans lines runing to it very noticable looking at the rad.
trans cooler have you installed a trans cooler ? it may have a stoped up factory cooler in the old radiator.
on the 76 i put an p/s elemanator on it and it was a quick bolt in deal.
i say min tub's and you are good. there is an outstanding tec rite up on the form sounds like a strate foward task. the d' look grate on the ol mav's
i would do a compression test. coil output. then point gap. keep us updated on the progress and good luck
