Maybe the rubber bushings on the strut rods are worn out/crushed and that's why there's no more adjustment. You could probably look at it yourself...
That adjustment is taken up with the strut rods.
The better timing sets come with the Torrington bearings.

I always thought that groove on the back side if the retainer lubed the thrust surface of the retainer/cam. Do I have it backwards?

If you're breaking in a new motor then I'm sure you primed the pump. Hook up the priming tool again and see what happens.
It would have to be one under the timing cover or there would be oil all over the ground I would think.
Nobody guessed a snapped off oil pump shaft. It's possible it's just sitting there in position looking pretty.
