I will tell you my experience, the 351w when I first put it in, did the same thing, I changed carbs, nothing changed, I changed heads, still no...
As you know a Maverick is never done, so to continue the build and changes made I am reviving this project thread....with more pics this time!...
It may also depend on the transmission you get as to what may need to be done, as I understand it some Ford 5 speeds are taller/larger than others.
Frank, did you ever get a crossmember/mount made for the Tremec TKO or 3550 transmissions to go into a 71' and up Maverick?
I know nothing much about those shifters but could something have fallen into the mechanism, wouldn't take much to stop it.
Is your throttle cable letting you use the full range of the carb, is it opening all the way?

I don't know why I wanna keep saying t5, it is a 3550, same design as the TKO just 10 spline input and 28 spline output shafts.
