Well.. go outside, preferably in a street where no one is driving.

Remove the fuel line going into the carburetor from the fuel pump. Lay the hose over the side of the car or get someone to hold it towards the street. Pump the accelerator once or twice then turn the engine over. If gas shoots out further than a couple of inches, you're probably okay on the fuel pump.

i just went out and popped the distributor cap and saw a small clip just laying inside, so i looked around inside the distributor and found a small rod with something overlpping it that was loose...so i put the c clip over the loose piece and connected it to the rod....BAM!! it works ok now...still a little wierd...but no where near as bad, i need a new c clip, the old one is so loose

Sounds like the rod for the vacuum advance. The auto parts or hardware store should have a selection of C clips for a replacement.

the rod was stationary, but the plate that overlapped the rod went into the vacuum advance, not a big plate, more of a 1/4" wide plate that went into it.
