I am new here, so first off, Hello everyone.

Okay, so I need some major help here. I want to purchase a 1975 Maverick, but my husband is not too keen on the idea. I wanted to get some pics, but have not been able to get back to where it is sitting.

    The specs I know:
250 straight 6 with 45,600 original miles. Runs fine. Needs brakes.
Interior is damn good, only problem is the cracked dashboard. All trim, mirrors, etc in good condition.
There is rust on the doors (both) but only surface. There are two spots under the doors (small spots) that are rusted through.
The paint is original and what I would call baby blue. Original rims as well.

Now for the hard part....what would the experts pay for this?

I want to convince my husband we should go for it. Please help me!

    Thanks a million,
    hopefully a future Maverick owner!

If it has rust THRU I wouldn't expect to pay too much.

By too much, what would you say was too much?

I do not know a great deal about Mavericks, exept that I fell in love with this car the minute I saw it and I want it. I have always loved older cars and I have always loved Mustangs. But I think I now like the Mavs better because they have more character. Any direction or comments anyone has is greatly appreciated.

I do know from what I have gathered here that the guy is asking too much for it, but I want to know what I should offer him. Whether or not he takes it is not up to me.

    Thanks again for any help!

    Trouble spots for rot:

*The front lip of the hood. Lift the hood and look up.

*The bottom of the doors. Often in the back of the lower door. The tiny weep holes get clogged, moisture doesn't drain, doors rust at the bottoms.

*Vinyl tops tend to rot the roof! I didn't know mine was rotten until I took the vinyl off and the roof came with it!

*Cowls tend to rot underneath where you can't see it. Look at the windshield, now gaze down towards the back of the hood. You will see vent slots between the bottom of the glass and back of the hood. This is the visible part of the cowl. Down inside the car, the cowl has water drains that get clogged with leaves and such. Then the car rots way down in there. Take a gallon container of tap water and pour it liberally down into the cowl slots. Move left and right as you pour to evenly distribute the water. All the water should drain out under the car on both sides. If any water drips onto the carpet from under the dash, you should probably walk.

    Good luck!
If you do find a member near you, they could look at it with you and point out known problem areas for you to consider. Some problems are easy and good bargaining points, while others are hard to deal with and deal breakers for most people.

Thanks ratio for all the good advice. I believe it is good on the cowl area due to the carpet being in good condition. I will look into this though.

I am in Tennessee by the way. About an hour from Nashville.

What is the most you would pay for this car with the rust damage I have listed, assuming that nothing is rusted thru other than a small hole on the body?

All opinions are welcome. I truely do appreciate all your help and hope to one day show off my pics of my car!

Oh yeah, no vinyl covers to worry about.

Also, forgot to mention it has an automatic transmission and drum brakes.

I would try to get it for under $1,000. But if you just have to have it, I'd say $1,500 MAX. I'd check the car over real well, especially look under it at the floors, torque boxes, and get down on the ground and look up behind the rear wheels and make sure no rust is up in there just to be totally sure. Pictures would really help.

What year is the car? If it is 72 or earlier it has the small bumpers. After that they went to the larger bumpers. Would really help to have pictures. One thing to do is go to ebay or craigs list and see what comparable cars are selling for.

Welcome aboard! Being that we haven't seen pics yet it's very hard to give you any ideas on price. I would say without pics that Jamie is probably pretty close. A Tenn car should be fairly solid. We wish you best of luck...just be careful. :)

Well for what its worth I can tell you what I paid for ours. First I tell you about it!
250 -6cyclinder,auto,drum brakes,no p/s,good glass, vynal top that will need work, rusted on back 1/4 tips both sides, great interior odo package(very nice) 4 brand new 215/70/15 tires on aluminum rims(good shape) Drove it home!
We gave $500.00. Alot of what a vehicle is worth depends on how much correction your willing to do and how much you like the car! My son and I are doing this build and I have average mechanical abilities,I have learnt alot about these cars by reading the posts here and asking lots of questions here. Theres guys here that know there mav's! To me $500.00 was a steal. But she needs some work! Hope that helps. The big question for you is to know how far you want to go with it before you begin ,its very addicting. That adds up to money!!
