Found this today. It's pretty rough, but if it's a true Comet GT I figure it's worth saving for $300.00.
Even if it isnt,(a GT)if the driver side is an indicator of the rest of the car it has potential.Ultimatetly it comes down to how much you want to spend to get it right. As well as how bad is the undercarriage.
Only you can really determine that. I see a car that looks like it has been sitting a long, LONG time. It will need EVERYTHING. 100% all new brakes, brake lines, etc. New or restored gas tank and all fuel lines. The wiring harness (all 3 of them) will need to be gone through. The entire rear axle will need to be gone thru. The list goes on and on. Are you up for the task?
Check for "ground rot" if it has been sitting a long time. Mid-West cars tend to rust from the bottom up because of the moisture in the ground, it seems. Looks like a deal at $300. The fun in this hobby is taking a lump of clay and making it into something beautiful. I usually end up replacing almost everything eventually on all of my cars anyway. Then you have a new old car that you can take anywhere for a lot less money than a new car. Jim
I don't see a hood scoop either. Probably need to see the interior and check if it has the Grabber-style door panels with the inlaid panel and the longer door handles. Did Comet GTs come with bench seats? Might be another clue. So far, I am guessing that someone got a decal kit.
I have saved two cars that were that bad off, just looking at the picture. Really need to check the rust on the under side to determine if it's worth it. My '74 Grabber was especially bad off, probably worse off then that car mechanically. It sat in a field for like 12 years during which time mice and all kinds of critters called it home and munched on the wiring and every thing. It had a locked up wheel, which thankfully Terry got it free before bringing the car to me. There wasn't much I didn't have to go through on that car, 100% new brake system front to back, 100% new fuel system front to back, had to go through the top end of the engine, repair a ton of wiring, pull the whole interior apart and literally hose it out (found two dead rats under the rear seat), if there could be something wrong, it was probably wrong with that car. I mean there was like stalactites forming in the gas tank... my neighbors 4 houses down complained when I pulled the gas tank out the old gas stunk so bad... It was a real mess and probably wasn't worth saving. But it had a solid body and I had more time then money, and ended up driving the wheels off that car for 7 months. The help I got on this board while reviving that car was invaluable. I would just go ahead and assume that nothing mechanical is any good on that car. Just figure you're buying a rolling body basically... so the condition of the body is what would determine if it's worth saving to me. That is the earliest production Comet I personally have seen so far..
looks like it had sport mirrors at one time. i believe i see the othe mounting hole for it on the driver's door. but you can't go wrong for $300. Buy it!
