The story is I was driving down the highway, and yes, the oil light came on. The sensor was not plugged and I have oil pressure as the oil will leak from the sensor when loosened. I started it when cold, it was fine until it warmed up then the light came on. I was thinking that it may be slug in the oil. so i figure, clean it, add gauges and change the oil more often, after all this car has been sitting for alot of years.I'm thinking the last time someone had it on the road would have been like 1993, going by the sticker on the glass and the low miles on the car. When I was taking the oil pan off I broke a head off of one of the larger bolts on the front drivers side of the engine. Oh boy, what a hassle. I drilled it and put in a extractor, I broke the extractor in the bolt. So now I'm trying to drill through the extractor and not getting to far. I used a dremmel drill with grinding stones. The stones seemed to work. had to go the store to buy another. I found that chainsaw sharpening bits work good because there nice and skinny. I was able to drill from the top of the bolt with the regular drill bit till it hit the extrator. then it was with the dremmel drill. Took some time. So now I have the extractor out and a hole right through the bolt. yeah. I tried to extract it agian; but, its in there tight. I don't really know why the oil light came on. It doesn't look that sludgy does it? You can see where the bolt broke in the 2d pic bottom right. it was a hard place to get at being the car frame is also in the way of getting the drill in there.
How many miles on the engine? What grade of oil are you useing. Engine does not look too bad (seen much worse) As far as grime/sludge goes, I would say that engine is pretty clean. Oil pressure may be low due to excess bearing clearances (typical with high mileage)I would install a new "stock" oil pump and pickup screen while the pan is off and pull the valve cover to check/clean the oil drains in the head. Cheezy oil filters and cheap/old oil can cause pressure problems.Oil pressure will drop when the engine is up to operating temp 15 to 20 psi drop is not uncommon. If it still has 10 to 20 psi hot at idle and increases as engine speed increases your engine is fine.10 PSI per 100 rpm is normal. I would install a mechanicle oil pressure guage and see what it does.Good luck!!!
I have an old computer and old eyes but it looks like the pick up screen is about halfway blocked by debris to me. My pictures are pretty dark though so I might be seeing whats not there. clint
ok well, I was using cheep sae 10w-30 API SM oil. The miles on it is like 45000.0 Is there a way to see if oil pump works properly? I bought an electrical oil gauge to install. Is there a reason in using a mechanical gauge? I have only changed the oil once since I have it running, and only drove it about 6-800 km Thanks.
Unless you can make a test rig to check the pumps output and pressure not really. A mechanicle guage gives you an instantaneous reading of actual pressure as opposed to, an electric one which has to convert an electrical resistance value to an analog needle movement. Your change interval has no bering on the pressure problem at this stage but... How often did the last owner change it and did this individual use a good oil...(Questions you may never know the answers to)
how old is the oil pump ?? i just bought a new one at kragen for $22 bucks and 11 bucks for the pickup tube
First of all you should have removed the sender and attached a gauge in the same place to find out if you really did have an oil pressure problem. The oil senders often leak from one side of the diaphram to the other and will be fine for a few minutes and then let the light come on as the pressure between the two sides equalizes. I believe that is what was happening to you. You may only have needed to replace the sender and drive on. While you have the oil pan off you can do nothing to test anything but you could spend a small fortune replacing bearings, pump, and pick-up just to find it was the sending unit all along.
Oil Pressure I agree w/ the guys who say put a mech gauge on B4 pulling that engine apart. It may not be necessary; esp, if your not hearing any noises frm the engine. I have seen bottom ends look much worst than yours and the engine still run quite well. From the pixs that bottom end don't look bad to me.
