I have herd that it was because it was outselling the mustang and the mustang was about to die, so they killed the maverick?:naughty:

    Any takes on this?

A body style can only run so long before it starts to loose it's style,Our cars had a good run with what small cosmetic updates they made.

i would guess it was from product overlap. the mustang defintly was fords performance minded car. the pinto was the economy car and was replaced with the escort. they had thunderbird wich was your ford luxury car. the granada was the midrange car. so the maverick really didnt have a place in the line up of cars that were being planed for the 80s. its platform was based on the 60s falcon so it was an old platform that was geting phased out.

I'd say the Fairmont was it's ultimate replacement.

I've always found it funny how a name can mean so much.

Someone was spouting off in another forum how "The Corolla is the bet selling car ever." Yeah ok, that's because Toyota never changed the name of their mid level car.

The maverick didn't die, it just changed names.

The Granada and the Monarch I believe is the reason they Ford discontinued Maverick and Comet. Ford began production of Granada and Monarch in 1975. This new car could be an economy car or a deluxe model. It was a new design that many of the new products would look like. There was also a Grand Monarch and a Lincoln Versailles. The Maverick and Comet was a dated design with limited models. They could have kept the Maverick and Comet name plates but I think Ford wanted a fresh identification about there cars. "Granada" is big city and "Monarch" is empire. Versailles is another city or country I believe. A Lincoln Versailles is a rare car now and they had 4 wheel disc brakes and a 9" rear ends. What to people think when you till them what kind of car you have? I was hired in at Fords Wayne Assembly Plant in July of '77 where the Granada and Monarch were built and became world class cars. The Maverick and Comet was built there in 1974 only. I was in the plant in 1974 to see the Mavericks and Comets as they were being built but did not work there yet. I placed an order for my Maverick Grabber in May of '74 and got it July 18th 1974. It was built in Canada! I worked 30 years at Wayne Assembly Plant.

I think the name taurus represents that granada was not as successful as maverick for that size range of cars, and possibly could be a "resurrection" of the mav four door for the mid sized family car target group.... just my .02 though. I also still think moving the tbird from a two seat sport coupe to a four seat family car was a wrong move also so im weird like that

I think that the 73 federal bumper laws are really what changed things for the mavericks and comets.

I have always thought the Tempo/Topaz, which were under engineering design in the late 70's, are the replacements for the aging Maverick platform. A Grandma grocery getter or second family car for the 80's. Affordable, economic, but not as small as the Escort.

    JMHO ........ :)

    Tempo/Topaz replaced the Fairmount/Zepher.
